After breaking into the T20I side, Chahal's impressive performances led to his inclusion in the ODI squad ahead of Jadeja and Ashwin. Without backing down, he continued to show maturity in grabbing all opportunities presented to him.

In 2017 he claimed 21 wickets, but what stood out was his accuracy and control.

In the tour to South Africa on flat tracks and fast pitches, Chahal beat all odds by finishing second behind his partner (Kuldeep) in the wicket-takers list with 16 wickets while the fast bowlers struggled.

He could not continue his impressive start as he failed to find his rhythm in England. In the Asia Cup, he bowled with better control and carried that forward in the home series against the West Indies providing ample support to his fellow bowlers.

In 2018, he has taken 29 wickets from 17 matches with an average of 26 and an economy rate of 4.82. He will look to improve in time before the World Cup with the competition that looms around him.
