Indian captain Virat Kohli jumped three places to reach the second spot in the latest ICC Test rankings released after the end of the India-Sri Lanka Test series. Kohli scored 243, his career-best score, in the final Test of the series in Delhi, his hometown, with an eventual draw resulting in India clinching the series 1-0.

He ended with 610 runs from the three-Test series, going past David Warner and Kane Williamson in the table, and now stands only behind Steve Smith in the batting rankings.

With him currently occupying the No.1 spot in ODIs and T20Is, he has a chance to reach the top spot in all three formats early next year. Ricky Ponting is the only batsman to have been at the top of the rankings in all three formats at the same time, when T20s were in their nascent stages in 2005-06.

Kohli has Cheteshwar Pujara for company as the other Indian in the top-10 batting rankings. The Saurashtra-born batsman slipped two places, and is now fourth.

The new update also takes into account the second Test of the ongoing Ashes, with Shaun Marsh, who had scored an unbeaten 126, gaining six places to reach the 27th spot.

His teammate Mitchell Starc moved two places to reach eight, while his bowling partner Pat Cummins gained two places to stand at 43.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja slipped one spot to reach third in the bowlers' rankings, with South African pacer Kagiso Rabada pipping him to the second spot. Ravichandran Ashwin continues to hold onto his position at No.4.
