Indian captain Virat Kohli and his predecessor MS Dhoni are just a whisker away from entering the top 10 in the list of ODI's highest run-getters. Both Kohli and Dhoni, neck and neck in terms of ODI runs, are on the verge of going past Brian Lara's career tally of 10405 runs.

As things stand before the New Zealand series, Kohli is India's fourth-highest run-getter in ODIs at 10385 runs, while MS Dhoni is right behind him at 10366. Apart from Kohli and Dhoni, no other active player is part of the 10,000-run club.

In October last year, Kohli became the fastest to reach the landmark of 10,000 ODI runs, beating Sachin Tendulkar's record by a good 54 innings. Before him, Dhoni crossed the coveted mark, during the ODI series against England, becoming only the second wicket-keeper, after Kumar Sangakkara, to achieve the feat.

After Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian with the most ODI runs is Sourav Ganguly, who played his last ODI in 2007 with 11,363 runs. Rahul Dravid is third, with 10,889 runs under his belt.

Along with this, Dhoni also has a chance to surpass Sachin Tendulkar's tally of most runs in New Zealand for India. The 37-year-old Dhoni is 197 runs behind Sachin, with Virender Sehwag placed at second in the all-time list.

Kohli, who debuted in ODIs four years after Dhoni, is just 10 centuries behind Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record of most centuries in ODIs. He also has the highest batting average amongst all batsmen who are in the top-10 run-getters' list.

Under Kohli, and with MS Dhoni by his side, the Indian team will be hoping to continue their winning momentum in the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting with the first game on January 23.

Here's the list of ODI's highest run-getters:

#1 Sachin Tendulkar (18,426)
