Iconic WACA stadium in Perth in danger of never hosting a Test match again

The WACA Cricket Ground

The world renowned WACA stadium at Perth, the venue of Australia’s victory today which won them back the Ashes, may be excluded from the Test playing venues in Australia in future.

The ICC and Cricket Australia (CA) cited poor facilities and infrastructure as the two primary reasons, which has rendered the venue unsuitable for hosting international matches.

The Western Australia Cricket association was dealt a major blow as it was left out for the four match Test series against India due next summer. To make things worse, top level administrators have issued repeated warnings, and the venue is now in danger of losing all Test and One day international matches to other interstate well equipped stadiums.

A redevelopment plan of 500 million dollars, which was a joint initiative of the WACA and CA was in place for seven long years, but was eventually rendered benign.

Some of the major issues with the WACA facility include a chronic lack of spectator safety and comfort which is highlighted by the narrow and often cramped walkways and under capacity toilets.

If CA had their way, the iconic venue could be left out altogether from the 2015-16 international schedule, which sees the likes of New Zealand and West Indies tour down under.

The only two options left for the administrators at Perth are to resuscitate the redevelopment plan, with prompt action, or move to a new facility – Burswood, which is a 60,000 seater, still under construction.
