Women’s exhibition matches at KPL 2018

Following up on last year’s introduction of Women’s matches at the Karbonn Smartphones Karnataka Premier League, powered by Lakshmi Vilas Bank, The Karnataka State Cricket Association this year gave the go-ahead for franchises to organize women’s teams for a set of exhibitions matches this year. These matches will be held on the 4th and 5th of September 2018 in Mysore, as part of the lead up to the finals of the main tournament.

Women’s cricket has noticed immense popularity after India’s successful World Cup Campaign, where they reached the final, falling short by nine runs in a nerve-wracking contest against England, last year. And the KSCA decided last year that it was time they offered a platform for the state’s women cricketers to showcase their talent.

There will be four teams this year, the Shivamogga Lions, The Mysuru Warriors, The Bijapur Bulls and the Belagavi Panthers. The teams will be coached by former Indian all-rounder Mamatha Maben and former Indian player Kalpana Venkatachar. The Bengaluru Blasters, Ballari Tuskers and the Hubli Tigers have also shown their support for the tournament.

This will be a stepping stone on the path to the creation of a women’s KPL tournament.

The matches will be as follows:

04/09/18 – Shivamogga Lions vs Mysuru Warriors – 10:30 am @SDNR Wadiyar Stadium, Mysuru

05/09/18 – Bijapur Bulls vs Belagavi Panthers – 10:30 am @SDNR Wadiyar Stadium, Mysuru
