One of the emotional backbones of Lies of P is the mystery surrounding Carlo, the son of Geppetto. While the game throws players into a dark, Belle Epoque-inspired world filled with puppets and plague, his story quietly haunts everything in the background. Carlos' death is more than a tragic moment — it’s the event that sets the entire story in motion.
If you've been wondering who he really was and how his end came to be, here’s a clear breakdown of his story.
Who was Carlo in Lies of P?
Carlo was the only child of Giuseppe Geppetto, the genius puppeteer behind Krat’s mechanical revolution. But the latter was never really a father to him. Obsessed with his work, he pushed Carlo aside, eventually sending him to live at the Monad Charity House, later known as the Rosa Isabelle Street Estate. It was there that Carlo met Romeo, a boy who would become his closest friend.

Together, they dreamed of becoming Stalkers — elite warriors trained to protect humanity. They sparred, trained, and stuck together through everything. But even as Carlo grew stronger physically and emotionally, he was growing hollow towards his own father.
Carlo’s relationship with him kept getting worse. The final blow came when Geppetto skipped the former's graduation — a moment the boy had clearly hoped would reunite them.
Instead, it pushed Carlo into open resentment. He even told Romeo that he wouldn’t care if his father died. In a symbolic gesture, Carlo gave Romeo his cherished necklace, showing more affection for his friend than for his parents.
Carlo's final days
Still determined to prove himself, Carlo sought out the Legendary Stalker, a powerful warrior who could’ve trained him. Instead, she dismissed his plea and cruelly ordered Gemini to “get rid of him.” The game never shows what exactly happened in that moment, but the encounter likely crushed Carlo’s spirit for good.
Not long after, a devastating outbreak caused by Alchemist experiments swept through Krat. Both Carlo and Romeo contracted the Petrification Disease, an incurable and fatal condition. Carlo died first, though the exact details of how or where remain unknown in the game, adding to the mystery and sorrow of his fate.
Geppetto’s guilt and the creation of P
Despite neglecting him in life, Geppetto was shattered by his son’s death. He became obsessed with bringing Carlo back. Using advanced technology and forbidden knowledge, he invented the P-Organ, a device capable of absorbing Ergo (the game’s life-force currency) and reviving a human’s essence.

Geppetto transferred Carlo’s Ergo into a puppet body. But the result was unstable and dangerous. So, he sealed that puppet away and created a second one called P, the protagonist you control. Designed to look like Carlo and equipped with the P-Organ, P was built to collect enough Ergo to eventually revive the original body.
Even more chilling, P is the only puppet in the world not bound by the Grand Covenant, making him Geppetto’s ultimate tool in his pursuit to resurrect his son.
Carlo’s death is what drives Geppetto, what shapes P, and what gives Lies of P its emotional weight beneath all the blood and steel.
