What is a Rocket Start?
A Rocket Start gives you a speed boost in Mario Kart World as soon as the race begins. In Mario Kart World, you can trigger this by watching the countdown at the start of each race. When the number 2 appears on the screen — not before, not after — you need to press and hold the A button. If done correctly, you’ll launch forward with a clean boost.

Timing is everything
You must press and hold A exactly when the number 2 is fully visible —that’s your boost window. If you press too early, you’ll stall. If you press too late, you’ll miss the boost. There’s a tiny but clear window between the "2" appearing and fading away. Hitting A right when the "2" settles into place gives the strongest boost possible.
Use Lakitu’s arm as a guide
If watching the numbers feels too inconsistent, pay attention to Lakitu, the character holding the countdown flag. When his arm reaches the bottom just as the "2" shows up, that’s the best moment to press A. It’s a reliable cue if you’re struggling with the countdown visuals.
Don’t press A too soon
If you hold A before the number 2 appears, your kart will stall at the line. It’s not just missing the boost — it’ll cost you seconds as everyone else speeds ahead. So wait until the right moment, even if you’re tempted to hit the gas early.
Keep practicing
Every race is an opportunity to practice timing. Even if you don’t get the perfect boost, holding A when the 2 starts to fade still gives you a small edge. The more you race, the more muscle memory you’ll build for hitting that exact moment.
