Playstation 4 posts impressive sales figures, outshines rival XBox One for 2nd month runnning

PS4

According to the latest figures released by research company NPD Group, Sony’s Playstation 4 pipped rival XBox One to most hardware units sold for the month of February.

The PS4 had, in January, beaten it’s competitor by a landslide margin of 2:1 which led many to fear Xbox One’s future in the market. However, the Xbox One seems to have picked up in February, losing to the PS4 by a very narrow margin this time around.

To quote exact figures, the Xbox One sold 258,000 units, 90% of the total PlayStation 4 sales in February, in the United States. However, Microsoft’s higher price point on Xbox One, gives it the hardware lead in terms of revenue earned. Official figures show hardware sales for the month at $347 million, with software earning at $318 million.

The two upgraded generations have proven to be bigger successes than it’s respective predecessor. Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 software sales are up 80% compared to PS3 and Xbox 360’s first four months.

NPD Group’s Liam Callahan stated that the majority of consoles “experienced double-to-triple digit increases compared to January 2014.”

Xbox One software sales exceeded 772,000 sales, with 2.46 million Xbox 360 games sold in February. According to Microsoft, this gives Xbox a 48% hold on the software market.
