PUBG: How does PUBG Mobile Matchmaking Work?

Highlight: No the matchmaking does not care only about the player's Tier!

PUBG Mobile has its own unique ranking system and ELO/MMR mechanism. In other games, a team shares the same fate, however, in PUBG Mobile the players get end game rating according to their performance, not on the team's performance.

If you're reading this, it means you have played a few or more PUBG Mobile games and you are either interested or irritated about the PUBG Mobile matchmaking mechanism.

Millions of players play PUBG every day and the game has a very complex ranking system. As expected, Solo, Duo, and Squad have a different ranking but the game even sets your rank different on each server. You have different ranks for TPP and FPP even which is also separated by Servers.

This can create more problems than solution. How? If PUBG matchmaking is based on tiers then it is supposed to be broken. Because a player who has Crown in Asia server will have bronze V in Europe, as a result even though he is a highly skilled player he will be matched against bots and new players. Which can be unfair to the new players.

Another reason, is that after a season gets over and the ranks drop, the matchmaking may become complicated. If a crown player drops to platinum chances are he will wreak havoc in the lower tier and that will be very unfair to the lower tier players as they will die early and get negative ratings.

But to save the day, PUBG already thought about it and created a matchmaking system that will not ruin the gaming experience of new players.

PUBG Mobile matchmaking does not only take one's tier into account. Tiers play a huge role but it is not the only factor that decides the matchmaking. To be more obvious, PUBG matchmakes on the basis of Skill level.

Yes, the matches get tougher and tougher as your rank increases but it's not because of the tier. If you have reached diamond from Bronze that means your tier has increased but your skills did too.

The first factor that is affected by the tier is the BOT factor. Higher your tier is, fewer bots you will have in your game. This means no more free kills for you in the early game to boost your Kill Rating. After a certain point, there are no bots at all and all of your enemies are real humans. Note that bots are only included in the game to make the matchmaking faster. Servers like ASIA can find you games where there are no bots at all.

Your tier decides how many bots and how many real players you will face but it does not decide who you will match against.

You know your Rank but do you know your Skill level?
You know your Rank but do you know your Skill level?

Skill-Based Matchmaking that you did not know about...

Yes! It's true. Just like DOTA2 or CSGO, PUBG matchmaking is also somewhat based on your stats and skills. If you are a crown ranked player in Asia and you want to play in Europe, after 5-6 games you will start seeing enemies who are as skilled as you. They will either match you against another Crown ranked players or someone who has a Crown rank in a different server and playing in Europe at the same time as you.

It does take the game 5-10 matches but soon after that, you will realize your enemies are highly skilled. The bots, however, are still the same for you in a new server. The bots are connected to tier and matchmaking so in a new server with a lower tier you will still see a lot of bots as they are put in the game for newer players but in the same game the top 10 ranked players will have same skill level as you do, however, they might have different Rank tier.

So, in the end, it does not matter what your rank or tier is, Your matchmaking is completely based on your skills and that is why in any new server you will get a good fight at any tier.

The game seemed easy when you started but is it getting tougher day by day?

Yes, it does get tough for everyone. There are mainly 3 top reasons behind why your games are getting tougher with time.

  1. Bots: As you play more games, your tier goes higher and higher. The bots are introduced to the game to entertain the new players and make the matchmaking faster. Once your tier starts going higher, the number of bots in every game decreases and you face more and more real players. Real players are smart, they know the mechanics and they are here to win, unlike the suicidal bots who will give you enough time to aim and shoot and not deal much damage to you.
  2. Skill: More games you play more things you learn. Slowly you will learn to crouch, jump to dodge a sniper and etc. PUBG mobile records 9 different factors to decide your skill level. As your skill level goes higher you match against players who have the same skill level as you do. Bullying the noob is easy but fighting your own size can often be frustrating if you don't take it seriously.
  3. Tier: Tier is not the only factor to decide the matchmaking but it definitely does make your games tougher. As mentioned earlier, you meet fewer bots in a higher tier which means you will get fewer kills. Also, the fact that a higher tier does mean a higher skill level. This is not the universal fact but if someone is grinding a lot of games to reach the next tier then they are also learning rapidly with each game and improvising which is making them better at the game.
