In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, taking down the Lone Shadow LongSwordsman (in short-The Ninja guy) takes longer than it took you to pronounce its name. (I'm serious)
This Lone Shadow guy is actually an optional mini-boss so you can pretty much avoid him because he's really tough to beat even with all the help. But if you're reluctant to give up just like me, I might actually have something for you in here.
The area where the entire battle takes place is very compressed and narrow down inside the cave. So there's very little space given to you to move around and dodge making you a prey to his ferocious slicings.
First of all, you need to bring with you two prosthetic tools with you which are -
#1 Flame Barrel
#2 Robert's firecracker
The flame barrel itself will do most of the job but if you run out of oil barrels then the firecracker becomes your biggest help during this battle. Now I already explained where and how to find oil barrels in my article in which I explained the easiest way to take down General Kuranosuke Matsumoto. So check out that article first.
Now if you don't yet know yet where to find this ninja guy, head left from the Ashima Reservoir Sculptor's idol after acquiring both the tools I mentioned above. Grapple on and reach to the other side to find two enemies, one with the drum. Run past them and swing about to find an NPC looking down the cave. That is where you need to go.
Don't go down yet. Instead, run up outside and you'll find a hole that will get you directly over him. Use this hole to air assassinate him once, which does 50% of the job for you. I actually didn't know about this particular hole before I beat him so yes, thank me later.
Anyways once he's aware of you. He will quickly come at you with multiple attacks. Once he does the jump attack, dash forward and go back to slice him once or twice while he recovers. Or even better, throw that oil barrel at him and wait to ignite him. Just like with General Kuranosuke Matsumoto, burn attack will bring down his health very quickly.
Also, another thing to note here is that he will repeatedly attack you to fill up your posture meter and assassinate you. BACK OFF whenever it's filling up or else you'll die real quick.
Since you can't damage his posture as he's really fast, just like Lady Butterfly, the only way to take him down by burning him and putting in some attacks or the slow approach where you put in one or two slices once he performs his move and recovers.
