The PS2 cemented Sony in the gaming market and is the best-selling console of all time, selling over 155 million units in its lifetime. It's pretty clear that no other console will beat this record anytime soon.

The best part about the PS2 era of gaming was the sheer variety of games that players were treated to from AAA titles and incredible exclusives to experimental and niche games which still have their fans today.

In today's list lets delve back into some of the PS2 games that helped define what many consider the best console ever made.

#4 TimeSplitters

The original TimeSplitters was a PS2 launch exclusive in some areas of the world and is one of the most fun shooters from that generation. This was before every shooter had to be Call of Duty and a modern military shooter and so, the game had charm and personality in boatloads.

The game came out in late 2000 and still holds up decently to this day. The story spans over a 100 years from 1935 to 2035 and is rather enjoyable.

#3 GTA Vice City

GTA Vice City was a timed exclusive on the PS2 and is one of the most influential video games of all time. My childhood for one was massively influenced by this game as were many.

Vice City improved on everything GTA III did right and improved upon it while introducing new mechanics. The story follows Tommy Vercetti and his return to Miami in the 70s. Inspired by films like Scarface, the story of betrayal and retribution sees Vercetti eventually rising to become one of the top bosses in the city after taking out his rivals.

#2 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is one of the best games in the series and the one most synonymous with the PS2. The Tony Hawk games helped bring the love of skating to kids from across the globe as we tried to recreate 15 of what we could do in the game.

From lip tricks to hitting the manual to continue that huge combo for a little longer, THPS4 did a lot right and remains fun to this day. It was also the first game in the series where players were allowed to free-roam meaning that we could explore the levels at our own pace.

#1 Kingdom Hearts 2

With Kingdom Hearts 3 about to come out, how can I not mention Kingdom Hearts 2. KH2 follows Sora's story as he travels across familiar and strange worlds along with Goofy and Donald. Although the plot can be hard to follow at times, being more convoluted than it needs to be, the game is a ton of fun.

This one defined the PS2 and hopefully, Kingdom Hearts 3 can live up to expectations after all these years.
