5 hottest win streaks in F1

Grand Prix of Great Britain

With Sebastian Vettel almost confirmed as the Driver’s Champion for the 4th consecutive year, many fans have claimed that he’s made the sport very boring. Of course, the same was said when Schumacher was reeling away win after win, so it is nothing new in F1. But that got us wondering, what are the top 5 win streaks in F1? We’ve compiled a list. It is in no way comprehensive; in fact, it is a very subjective list. Of course, suggestions are always welcome in the comments section.

5. Sir Jackie Stewart

Perhaps one of the most dominant performances was Sir Jackie Stewart’s 1969 season. The season had 11 races, and the start he had to the season was so brilliant that his rivals did not stand a chance. He won 5 of the first 6 races, and he would have won the 6th race too, if it wasn’t for a retirement.

What makes this special? Out of the 5 wins that he had, he also recorded the fastest lap in 4 of them. Even in the Monaco GP, where he had to retire, he registered a fastest lap as well! There is another reason why this streak is special. In the Spanish Grand Prix, he won the race with a lead of 2 laps; in the French GP, he won the race with a lead of over a minute; at the British GP, he won by a lap!

4. Jenson Button

F1 Grand Prix of Belgium

Jenson Button has always been a late bloomer in F1. It took a long time for him to win his first ever race, and even longer to win his first, and possibly last, Drivers’ Championship. In the end, he may have won the title by just 11 points, but the dominant first few races ensured that he had enough points to win the title.

Button won 6 of the first 7 races in the 2009 season, ensuring that there was a sizeable lead in the table. Of course, it was more due to the car as the Brawn GP used the double diffuser which nobody came up with, giving them an upper hand over the rest of the field. In spite of that, it was still a hot streak as it helped him get the necessary points, especially since the rest of the season went downhill for him.

3. Sebastian Vettel

F1 Grand Prix Of Brazil - Race

Considering he is the reason why the discussion has come up in the first place, it would be criminal to not include the 2011 season in the list.

Of the first eight races, Vettel won 6 of them, putting a marker on the title. Just to ensure that the title was in no doubt, he reeled off 5 more wins in the last eight races! In the end, he won the title by a massive lead of 122 points, over the defending champion Jenson Button.

2. Alberto Ascari

Pilot Alberto Ascari. 1951.

When a list of all the Ferrari legends is ever drawn up, Alberto Ascari is one of the first names to be there. In the 1952 season, Ascari won all the 6 races that he participated in. Added to that, he even registered the fastest lap in all 6 of them. To add further to his dominance on the season, he was on pole for 5 of them, missing out on a perfect season by just 1 pole.

He continued this dominance in the next season as well, winning 5 races in 1953. Is there any doubt that he won the title both seasons?

1. Michael Schumacher

Ferrari Unveil The New Ferrari 248 F1 Car - January 24, 2006

Probably one of the greatest racers in the history of F1, Michael Schumacher is bound to come up in the list. And the 2004 season was a fantastic season for him as he won a massive 12 races of the first 13. In fact, he would have made it 13 out of 13 if it wasn’t for his crash in the Monaco GP while he was leading it.

Schumacher has had many dominant seasons, but perhaps 2004 was the one year that showed how he was clearly the best in the world. It is impossible to know if he was better than Ayrton Senna, but if there was a close competitor, it has to be Schumacher.
