Former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve feels that the FIA are desperately trying to bring in some excitement into F1 by introducing the double points rule in the final race.

The 1997 championship winner said, “It is a terrible idea, it shows that Formula One doesn’t know what to invent anymore to try and create interest. It is overly artificial.”

“I am not sure what the purpose is other than for the Abu Dhabi organisers, who have spent millions, to keep the interest going until their own race.”

The Canadian also added that the upcoming season will not be so rosy as compared to the last season as Red Bull barely managed to put in some laps in the first pre-season testing in Jerez.

“We don’t know how competitive the Red Bull is because they just can’t do laps so that is worse than not being competitive.”

“They really need to fix it otherwise they won’t even be able to finish qualifying.”

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone revealed that he is keen on applying the double points rule to the final three races.

The season starts in Australia on 16th March.
