Maria de Villota, the former Formula One reserve driver and daughter of former F1 driver Emilio de Villlota, has been found dead. Her body was found in a hotel room in Seville, Spain.

Just over a year ago, she was involved in a massive accident, which led to severe head and facial injuries, and the loss of an eye. The accident occurred when she was testing for Marussia in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Despite the Spaniard being cleared to drive again earlier this year, she is said to have passed away due to the after-effects of that crash. The police are treating it as a death by natural causes.

Her family released a statement on her death:

“Dear friends: Maria is gone. She had to go to heaven with all of the angels. Give thanks to God for the year and a half we had left together. Signed, the Villota family.”
