Heikki Kovalainen has expressed his confidence in Caterham’s car for next season and also admitted that only time will tell how much the team has progressed.

“Everything is progressing better than ever before, but whether it’s good enough or not is hard to say. With so many changes coming up you don’t really know what other people are targeting,” Kovalainen told ESPNF1.

“So we know that we’re going to make a car that is quicker than this car but the question is are the top guys also going to make a car as quick as they have now or are they going to have to drop a little bit of performance because of the regulation changes?,” he added.

Kovalainen joined Caterham as a reserve and test driver, also said that the team is determined and is working hard to progress.

“This is what we don’t know, so that determines the gap that we’re going to have next year and whether we can catch that up or not. So I’m quite happy so far with what I see how the team is performing. We’re still a small team but we are working better and improving every area as I think we should do,” he said.

The driver also expressed his desire to return to Formula One next season and said that he will hold talk with the teams on the matter.

“I am not in discussion with any other teams and even with Caterham just at the moment I am just focusing on this role that they have given me this year and I have no firm plans for next year yet. I think it is good. It is not 100%, but I’d say I have a good chance. Of course if a sponsor wants to give me a lot of money I don’t mind, but I am not going after money,” he told Sky Sports F1.
