Mercedes’ star driver Lewis Hamilton suffered a tremendous crash during qualifying at the German Grand Prix, but has mircalously escaped unhurt.

The British racer lost control of his car while entering the Sachskurve hairpin during the first session of qualifying today, and went spinning into the advertisement boards lining the track. The cause of the crash was a brake failure, based on what he said over the radio after the incident.

"I'm OK. I hit the brakes and something… the brakes failed,” he was recorded as saying.

Fortunately, Hamilton hasn’t suffered any major physical damage from the crash. He underwent a medical check-up immediately after emerging from the wreckage of the car, and was cleared to race tomorrow, althought he was quoted as saying that he was “sore from the crash”.

The 29-year-old, who had won his home race at Silverstone two weeks ago, was once again the co-favourite to triumph at this weekend’s race, along with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. The failure to complete the qualification lap, however, means that Hamilton will have to start from 16th place on the grid in the race tomorrow, which will severely hamper his chances of winning.
