Michael Schumacher‘s life is “no longer in danger”, according to Philippe Streiff; former racing driver and Schumacher’s friend. He said:

“I’m not a doctor, I’m repeating what Gerard Saillant (surgeon and friend of the Schumacher family) told me.

“Gerard Saillant said it is a serious condition but his life is not in danger anymore now, thankfully.”

However no statements or details have been released by the hospital to confirm these claims. Investigators are examining a camera that was attached to Schumacher’s ski helmet, while also questioning Schumacher’s son and his friend who were also present when this mishap took place. Schumi’s family have handed the “Go-Pro” camera to police.

Schumacher’s family posted a statement on their website thanking fans who held a hospital vigil for his 45th birthday, saying the show of support had moved them to tears.

Supporters from Italy, France also were present, holding Ferrari flags, some bearing gifts and cards, which they handed over to Schumacher’s manager. One group sang Happy Birthday while a woman cried and another group quietly unfurled a Ferrari banner.

Stefano Pini, a 47 year old Italian accountant who got up at three in the morning to catch a bus from Milan said “Schumi gave us so much, The least we could do is to come here and support him and his family,”

Officials are hoping the camera will provide conclusive evidence about the details of his accident, in which he sustained severe head injuries and led him to a medically induced coma. Two operations on his brain have been performed to reduce the inter-cranial pressure from his bran and reduce swelling; stabilizing his condition but he is still not out of danger.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm denied reports that he was skiing at high speed and added he only ventured into an unmarked area between two pistes after stopping to help a friend of his daughter who had fallen. He was catapulted into the air when he hit a rock concealed by recently fallen snow and his head struck another rock and his helmet broke in two, she added. The accident happened only about 300 yards from the chalet Schumacher owns at the Meribel resort in the French Alps.
