Sauber performed really well last season, grabbing four podium finishes. But the team has struggled so far this season, having managed to score just seven points. The C32, their car for this season, has not been up to mark and it has been hampering their chances.

Sauber Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn admits that they have underperformed and underachieved in the first half of the season.

“It’s been a disappointing first half because we clearly came here with high expectations which were based on last year’s performance and in view of the changes from last year to this year I think we had good reason to believe that. We somewhere went wrong, we’ve seen the result now and now we’re working our way up again slowly but surely,” Kaltenborn told ESPN.

Sauber recently have also been facing financial problems raising questions regarding the team’s future in F1. Also with other teams outperforming them, many have started to doubt the team’s ability to repeat last season’s performance.

However, Kaltenborn is optimistic that they will make improvements in the next half of the season which will start next weekend.

“We’re in the middle of a season right now and you should not underestimate any team. Last year, it looked like we were a safe bet for sixth position and we were going for the fifth and eventually at the last race it wasn’t even sure where we were, so I think we should really be prepared that until the end nothing is really decided in this part of the championship,” Kaltenborn added.
