F1 cars are complex machines that are constantly evolving given the development race that the sport is always in. In order to keep improving their cars, teams have to bring in periodic updates as they progress through the season.

However, sometimes these updates are track specific - like bringing in a trimmed rear wing for a circuit like Monza, which does not require a high amount of downforce.

As highlighted in the video by Mercedes, there are two main types of upgrades: aerodynamic and chassis related. Both units need to work together to ensure a smooth integration onto the main car, giving its drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, the best possible chance against their rivals.

A concept is first visualized by engineers and then simulated on powerful computers, before finally hitting the wind tunnel for 'proof of concept'.

The Silver Arrows are reportedly going to bring a massive concept update soon, potentially changing the way the car creates its downforce. However, only time will tell if they are successful.

Mercedes' George Russell on Red Bull's pace in Miami

Red Bull's dominant performance at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix does not come as a surprise to George Russell. Despite starting the race in ninth position, the reigning world champion comfortably claimed victory while his teammate Sergio Perez secured second place.

On the other hand, Mercedes' Russell surpassed his teammate Lewis Hamilton in the qualifying round. He showcased a commendable pace throughout the 57-lap race, ultimately finishing in fourth position, trailing behind the two Red Bulls and Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin.

The RB19 has established itself as the fastest car on the circuit by a significant margin, winning all races thus far in 2023. Nevertheless, Russell maintains a degree of skepticism regarding the actual pace of Red Bull, considering the lack of competition from the rest of the grid at present.

The Mercedes driver said:

“I wasn’t really surprised, no. That’s where they are at the minute, we said at the start of the season, they’re so far ahead, they’ve got it easy at the moment. I wonder if they’re even running full power.”

He added:

“It’s a bit of a shame for the sport but kudos to them for the good work they’ve clearly done, and shown what it’s possible when you get it right. That’s what we’re gonna be chasing, let’s see what we can achieve.”

It will be interesting to follow the Silver Arrows' progress in the coming times, given their massive upgrade plans.
