Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has opined on the W15's Imola package after Lewis Hamilton and George Russell's promising free practice runs stooped to a lackluster showdown during qualifying. The 2024 season will witness its first anti-clockwise run on the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit, comprising 63 laps of adrenaline-packed battle.

Since the current season kicked off, the German outfit has struggled with dominance as the new Mercedes W15 couldn't meet the expectations so far. Despite several upgrades, Hamilton and Russell couldn't exercise their dominance on the asphalt. The team suffered a major blow during the Australian GP, with a double DNF resulting in a zero-point finish.

Moving forward, the Silver Arrows churned out a comparatively superior result in the FP2 session, where Lewis Hamilton came fourth and Russell in fifth. However, the W15 failed to showcase a similar display during the qualifying run, and the teammates stood sixth and eighth fastest, respectively.

Though Toto Wolff believes his team is "creeping forward," he highlighted the need to improve their current package further to pull them up from fourth place in the constructors' standings. Mercedes' boss spoke with Sky Sports, emphasizing the need "to do better", saying:

"Mercedes must do better. I think when you look at the gap to the front, it's progress. Four-tenths off... we need to do better. It's pointing in the right direction and even though sixth is not good enough, we are creeping forwards."

Sharing his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton's P8 grid start at Imola, Wolff added:

"He's not been feeling happy with the car today. He's not feeling the grip."

"Yesterday was looking strong" - Lewis Hamilton on Mercedes W15's drastic change from Friday to Saturday

Lewis Hamilton was on a hot streak during the hybrid era and collected six driver championships and eight back-to-back constructor titles for Mercedes. The last time the 7x WDC emerged victorious was at the 2021 Saudi Arabia GP. Ever since then, the Brit has yearned to grab his 104th win but has suffered setbacks so far.

The FP1 session saw Hamilton finishing seventh while his teammate performed quite well and secured the second spot. The next free practice run brought the Mercedes closer, where the #44 driver improved from P7 to P4, while the #63 driver fell from P2 to P5. FP3 was an utter disappointment for Hamilton as he found himself in 17th place after a poor showdown on the 4.909 km circuit.

Though Lewis Hamilton rose from the rear of the grid and locked eighth place for the Imola GP, he was seemingly dissatisfied with his run. The Brit highlighted how his teammate performed way better with the same package and also shed light on the big drop in performance of the W15 from FP sessions to the qualifying run.

He told the aforementioned publication:

"I think George's lap was the maximum pace wise of what our car could do. I couldn't reach that today. Yesterday was looking strong. But good, positive, to see us pace wise a little bit closer.
"That's one thing we don't fully understand is like on Friday, we seem a bit quicker and then on Saturday, we seem to lose a little bit time to the others. But George was pretty quick out there. I think he really got to check the setup this weekend, like he has done most of this this year. For me, it worked differently,” Hamilton added.

Per the updated rankings post the Miami GP, George Russell is 10 points and two places ahead of Lewis Hamilton in seventh.
