At an exclusive event at their headquarters in Milan, Pirelli today unveiled their entire range of 2013 tyres, which the manufacturer says will offer more uncertainty and multiple stops during the race.
This exactly isn’t new to all those who read the comments of Paul Hembery earlier, who clearly stated that their 2013 compounds are the biggest changes that they introduced upon their return since 2011. The event was organized to unveil the plans of Pirelli for the upcoming season. In this event, Pirelli have confirmed that Jaime Alguersuari and Lucas di Grassi will continue their existing roles.

The 2013 spec Tyres from Pirelli have all been developed a tad softer as compared to their 2012 spec tyres. The new 2013 spec Pirelli Hard which will now be distinguished with the orange sidewall, is now softer, and is closer to the 2012 Medium tyres. The whole idea behind the tweak that these tyres have received is to increase their operating range while also increasing the faster thermal degradation. All of the dry compound tyres will have larger performance gap, which means that the teams will have to get the strategies right in the race.
“All the constructions and compounds are new – in fact, these are probably some of the biggest changes that we’ve introduced since entering Formula One in 2011 – but at the same time I think the teams will have some idea of what to expect from us this year. There’s a more rapid warm-up and more temperature going into the tyres, because they are working harder with a bigger footprint in cornering. We’re trying to bring back some degradation, because last year we actually had negative degradation, with just one pit stop. So this year’s tyres will be a little more extreme.”
Paul Hembery have already confirmed us that the the manufacturer had not had any discussions regarding their 2014 specification tyres, and that they always considered Formula 1 as a medium term project, and the word on their future should come from FIA, a decision on which should hopefully be coming out around Q1 of this year.
“We’ve always said that we saw Formula One as a medium term project. For everyone’s benefit this needs to be sorted out as soon as possible, in the first quarter of this year. We’ve not had any advanced discussions about this, because as it stands our contract runs until the end of 2013 and until that is reconfirmed there is not much point in going into a load of extra detail about 2014.”
Towards the end of the last season, Pirelli were criticized by many for the lackluster races but Paul Hembery has stated that the lack of drama was because the teams understood the tyres as the season progressed, and this is the reason for the pecking order that appeared towards the last few races. He further went on to state that the 2013 spec tyres will help the drivers showcase their talent, and will offer them something to ponder about all through the season.
“The differences are not major, but there will be some different characteristics and general improvements. So we’re hoping that our 2013 tyres will allow the drivers to showcase their talents in the best possible way once more and give them something to think about from the start to the end of the season.”
When asked about the their approach to the 2013 season, he stated that their approach will be similar to 2012, but they will be less conservative.
