F1 Grand Prix of Germany - Qualifying

In what was one of the weird accidents in motorsports, the Nurburgring race witnessed Mark Webber’s RB9 losing one of its rear wheels in the pit lane which then went on to hit FOM cameraman Paul Allen. The accident left Allen with a broken collarbone and broken ribs.

Red Bull Racing quickly launched an investigation and is reported to have submitted a detailed report to the FIA and also to the other teams. The accident was apparently triggered by a human error. According to Red Bull’s findings, the right rear-gun man accidentally sent the “go” signal before the wheel was properly attached.

In the aftermath of the accident, the FIA and FOM have banned all television crews from entering the pit lane.

Red Bull will also make changes in its pit lane procedure. One of the changes include a system to avoid the “go” signal being accidentally sent. The new procedure will also make sure that the front jack man does not release the car until all of the wheels are properly attached.
