Singapore Grand Prix: Two DRS zones in place

Two DRS zones for the 2013 Singapore Grand Prix

FIA have confirmed that the Singapore Grand Prix will have two DRS zones this year, as opposed to the single DRS zone that was in use last year.

The first DRS zone is the same as last year and will run from Turn 5, through the fast right hander at Turn 6, up till Turn 7. The detection point lies 230m before Turn 5.

The new addition will be the DRS zone on the Start/Finish straight. The detection point will lie 80m before Turn 22. However, this will be a short zone and will only aid drivers in moving closer to those in front rather than giving them an overtaking opportunity.

Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane explains: “The additional DRS zone along the pit straight is very short so we wouldn’t expect that to have much of a bearing on overtaking.”

“It may help a driver close up to the car in front through the opening sequence of corners, but even the original section from turn five to seven is quite a tricky place to make a move so it’s unlikely to have a major influence.” he added.
