Caterham’s Giedo van der Garde drives during the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix

Dutchman Giedo van der Garde of the Caterham team was handed a five-place grid penalty for the next Grand Prix at Silverstone on June 30 after causing an accident with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg at Montreal on Sunday.

Van der Garde had already been hit with a 10-second drive-through penalty during the race for a dangerous manoeuvre as he was being lapped by Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

The 27-year-old rookie’s second penalty was imposed for having ignored blue flags indicating he should allow Hulkenberg to pass, and for having caused the accident that took both of them out of the race on lap 44.

Van der Garde’s best qualifying performance on the 22-place grid so far was 15th in Monaco, while three times he has propped up the time-sheets.
