10 most hilarious tweets by footballers ever

F
#facepalm moments

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have all become an integral part of modern day sports. Previously, footballers used the tool to interact with their fans and voice their opinions without mincing words. In a world of commercialization, most footballers these days use their huge fan following to market their own brands and please their sponsors on social media.

With most of their accounts being handled by PR firms, we see more carefully constructed and well-worded posts which hardly give us any insights into their lives. Only a handful of footballers like Michy Batshuayi, Benjamin Mendy entertain their fans with hilarious tweets and posts. Much unlike the others who bore us with their standard "Great performance from the lads, three points in the bag" and so on.

Back when footballers used social media as free birds like most of us do, football and twitter really did come together to form a hilarious combo. Both players and managers were able to provide some hilarious moments in 140 characters or fewer. Here we found 10 of the funniest tweets and Twitter exchanges from over the years.

#10 Batshuayi

Michy Batshaui's twitter handle needs no introduction. He is the lord of the internet. Some of his tweets are downright hilarious.

Back to 2015/16, Michy enjoyed a stellar season with Olympique de Marseille which piqued interest from Chelsea and a host of other clubs. Despite racking up 9 assists, EA Sports gave him a mere 59 score on his passing attributes for the 2016 edition of the Ultimate Team video game. Here's what the batman had to say about it:

#9 Victor Wanyama

The Kenyan midfielder, who was immortalised by his famous 'I had spaghetti and it was very nice' tweet is a favorite of ours. Although his tweets have died down somewhat over the last few years, some of the Spurs midfielder's posts from around four or five years ago are truly epic.

Here's the most surprising and intriguing of the lot.

#8 Victor Anichibe

We'd like to thank Victor Anichebe for busting the myth that professional footballers write their own tweets. We now know social media accounts are managed by expensive PR companies these days, but Anichebe still managed to mess up with a simple copy-paste job.

This one was back in 2016 when Sunderland were off to their worst ever start. The Nigerian forward had played just 13 minutes since joining Sunderland as a free agent, but that did not stop him tweeting his support for his team following the devastating last-minute defeat to West Ham United.

#7 Cristiano Ronaldo

How can any top 10 article not feature the G.O.A.T that is Cristiano Ronaldo?

This was the greatest unintentionally funny tweet in human history. This belongs in a museum.

<p>
GOAT on and off the field

Ronaldo was actually launching a CR7 line of underwear the following month. As a promotion for the boys' line, Ronaldo's CR7 brand held a contest on Facebook where the participants were to Upload their best, craziest and funniest fan image showing their love for CR7 to win a trip to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and seen him play a match!

So the Juve striker wasn't actually thanking his followers for photos of boys in underwear; he was thanking folks for participating in his contest which simply showcased their love for him.

#6 Wayne Rooney

What was Rooney's greatest contribution to football? His overhead goal versus City? His celebration which made it to FIFA? They'll probably slot in at number 2 and number 3 respectively. At number one is his most impressive contribution - his twitter banter. Like Rooney, we'll just let his tweets do the talking.

Thanks for letting the world know of your kind gesture. Just by the way, there is a messaging feature.

Apparently, he uses twitter to get into arguments with himself:

And he cursed his teammate with this overtly optimistic tweet:

#5 Robert Huth

Joachim Low asked for it. He dropped Sane, but okay, there was Reus. He dropped Robert Huth and that proved to be his biggest downfall. This surprising omission was the reason why Germany were eliminated from the group stages in Russia.

Jokes apart, Germans have a lot to thank Robert Huth for. He's challenged the stereotype that the Germans are all unwitty, humourless, no-nonsense robots whose laughter muscles have atrophied as a result of disuse.

The former Stoke City and Jonathon Walter teammate, and now Leicester City defender has shown why he is the funniest German person in history, even ahead of Thomas Muller with this banter:

Robert, you beauty

#4 Everton

....
....

This is what happens when PR personnel forget to log out of the club's account and end up using it to send heartfelt messages to their loved one...

This time it was the Merseyside club, the Toffees who had to bear the wrath of the eagle-eyed followers who were quick to screenshot this before they could delete the tweet.

#3 Surprise surprise

An average footballer only tweets after a game because his PR team tells him to. An average footballer only tweets to advertise some boots or some underwear line of his. But that's not R****t H**h. He is the true God among men. If he wasn't really average, he deserves something special as a testament to his greatness. So for the second time on our list ladies and gentlemen, Robert Huth.

Before we head right in and bow down to the king, here's a little background information. Huth and Walters were teammates at Stoke. With Huth departing for Leicester, he bid adieu to the 'sensational' Stoke fans. Walters, still bitter over the tweet we saw a few pages ago tried to level it up by tweeting:

Only to get murdered by Huth who responded saying:

Yo
You just don't mess with Huth

#2 Best Egyptian Player aka Mohammad Elneny

If you though Huth had savaged Walters, you might want to add another word to the dictionary to describe this ultra-outrageous, mega-savage tweet by Arsenal wizard Elneny

#1 Peter Crouch

Oh, dear Pete!

An avid football would know - this list would've been incomplete and could not have not featured a certain Peter Crouch. There are just too many good ones for us to pick just one for the number one spot. Here are 4 of his best tweets which are all equally deserving of the number one spot:
