Arsenal were very close to signing Vincent Kompany back in 2006, when the Belgian was playing for Anderlecht. Kompany was scouted by Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman even met with the player’s agent - but things failed to materialize.
The Manchester City skipper’s agent Jacques Lichtenstein revealed that him and Kompany decided against moving to Arsenal in favor of Hamburg as they felt that Kompany wasn't ready to play for a top club just yet and being a third or fourth choice player in the team would have hurt his growth as a player.
One can only imagine how different the Gunners would have performed with a rock-solid defender stopping any and all attacks.Considering how Arsenal's biggest problems in the past have been defense related, it might have been a very influential transfer.
