The 1994 World Cup saw many unheralded teams exceed expectations. Two of those sides were Sweden and Romania. Sweden had done well in the group stages, defeating Russia and drawing with Cameroon and Brazil.

Their last 16 matchup pitted them against Saudi Arabia, another surprise package whom Sweden comfortably overcame 3-1, thus qualifying for the quarter-finals. Romania, on the other hand, were in the midst of their best ever World Cup.

Led by the talismanic Gheorghe Hagi, the Romanians had beaten the United States and highly favored Colombia to take first place in their group despite losing to Switzerland. In the round of 16, they shocked Argentina 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

In the quarterfinals, Romania were up against Sweden at Stanford. The match though only sprung to life in the final 12 minutes. Sweden drew first blood through their star of the tournament Thomas Brolin.

However, a late equalizer from Florin Raducioiu brought the Romanians back on track and the match went into extra time. It was Romania who took the lead thanks to a second goal from Raducioiu, in the 101st minute.

With the game nearing its end, Romania were on the brink of their maiden World Cup semifinal, however, Kennet Andersson outjumped Romanian Florin Prunea to head in the equalizer for Sweden five minute before time, sending the match into penalties.

Sweden won 5-4 thanks to their captain and goalie Thomas Ravelli. They eventually ended the World Cup in 3rd place and Andersson was the joint third highest goalscorer of the competition with 5 goals.
