When Mario Goetze scored the winner for Germany in extra time against Argentina in the World Cup final, little did he know the milestone he had helped all 32 teams achieve.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil was a goal-fest and the German forward’s goal was the 171st goal to be scored – joint top with the 1998 World Cup in France. The tournament also saw all teams get on the score sheet in at least one game.

In 20 editions of the prestigious tournament, there have been a total of 2379 goals!

The tournament that saw the least goals was the 1934 edition which saw 16 teams and only 70 goals.

The 1954 edition saw the most goals per game with 5.38 goals scored per game on average. The World Cup with the least goals per game was the 1990 World Cup which saw 2.21 goals per game.
