The winner of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will take home $35 million in prize money, and each of the 32 competing nations will get at least $8 million.
The figure was released on Thursday by FIFA’s executive committee and is part of a $576 million fund set aside for the tournament. The funds are to be used to settle payments to clubs across the globe as well as to take care of insurance cover in the case of injured players’ salaries.
At the last World Cup in 2010, champions Spain earned $30 million from a total purse of $348 million that was allocated for the teams.
FIFA will pay the money to the 32 respective national federations, each of whom will get an additional $1.5 million to prepare for the premier tournament next year.
In some separate news, the German federation has assured all 23 players a bonus of 300,000 euros ($407,000) if they come back home with the big prize.
