3 goalkeepers Liverpool should target

Liverpool v Chelsea - Premier League
Simon Mignolet could still lose his place as Liverpool's number one

Liverpool's goalkeeping department has easily been one of the most scrutinised areas of the club for the past number of years. Ever since long-serving 'keeper Pepe Reina left and Simon Mignolet came in as his replacement, the Reds have faced criticism from just about every corner of their fan-base, with the Belgian struggling to put in consistent performances and establish himself as the club's number one.

Manager Jurgen Klopp payed £4.7 million to bring German Loris Karius to Merseyside as Mignolet's potential successor but the former Mainz star has struggled to live up to expectations and currently finds himself behind Mignolet on the team-sheet, with rumors continually suggesting that Klopp is seeking yet another shot-stopper to sort out his side's defensive problems.

Should the reports be true, here are three goalkeepers the German boss could look to bring to Anfield.

#1 Alisson

AC Milan v AS Roma - Serie A
Roma goalkeeper Alisson has been linked with a move to Liverpool recently

There has been low-key speculation linking Roma goalkeeper Alisson with a move to Liverpool, recently, and the 25 year-old could be on the move if such reports are to be believed.

The Brazil international would certainly make a decent replacement for Mignolet at the club. He has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Roma and is joint first with Pepe Reina and Samir Handanovic for the most clean sheets in the Italian league (9).

Alisson has been praised for his reflexes and ability to handle shots from close range, as well as a willingness to command his own box - a quality which Mignolet has been criticised for lacking.

Having done business with Roma for the acquisition of forward Mohamed Salah last summer, Liverpool could return to the Serie A side for yet more business.

#2 Jack Butland

Burnley v Stoke City - Premier League
Jack Butland is considered one of England's top goalkeepers

He may be playing for a struggling Stoke City side that has just parted ways with their manager, but the general consensus on Jack Butland is that he is a good goalkeeper, who is let down by his defenders too often. Perhaps if he had a stronger defence in front of him, he would show his true worth.

It's a risk that Liverpool manager Klopp would be taking if he were to move for Butland. The England international has been linked with a move to Anfield, with Chelsea reportedly rivalling the Reds for his signature.

Butland would also bring a commanding presence to the Reds squad, along with his quality delivery. However, the Stoke 'keeper's inconsistency is something he would have to improve on if he is to win over the Liverpool supporters.

#3 Kevin Trapp

Manchester City FC v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League Quarter Final: Second Leg
Kevin Trapp may look elsewhere for regular first-team football

With just two starts in the league for Paris Saint-Germain this season, Kevin Trapp has been struggling for game time, as manager Unai Emery prefers Alphonse Areola over the German international. It's a decision that could see the 27-year-old make himself available for a move in search of regular first-team football and Liverpool could just be the perfect destination for him.

Trapp can easily be seen as an upgrade on Mignolet and compatriot Karius, thanks to his shot-stopping ability and experience from playing with and against some of Europe's best defenders and attackers.

That quality alone could be a huge plus for Liverpool, as Trapp would demand only the best from his back-line, while the fact that he is also strong in penalty situations is a vital asset to have. Reds fans will be hoping that the prospect of playing for his fellow countryman Klopp is an appealing one.
