Manchester United are currently going through a rough patch. The club formerly known as Newton Heath are deep through a transitional phase having finished 6th in the Premier League last season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men need to step up their game with competition for the top-4 getting hotter. With that in mind, the club has splashed the cash bringing in two players namely Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The exuberance of these young talents is expected to spruce up the squad and give it a youthful look.

The ‘Red Devils’ have also been reported as having identified Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes as someone who can provide a cartload of goals and assists from the heart of their midfield. Not to mention their neverending pursuit of Leicester City defender Harry Maguire for whom they were involved in a tug-of-war with rivals Manchester City, who were also highly interested up to until a few weeks ago.

However, with incomings, there also must be quite a few sales with a view towards balancing the books. Also with new arrivals, existing players might sometimes be deemed surplus to requirements and thus, the squad needs to be trimmed. With it being Ole’s first full season in charge of the club, he is within his right to discard those who he deems incompatible to his playing style. The Norwegian also seeks to imbibe the United spirit within each and every one of his players and those he deems unworthy of the badge will most likely be shown the door.

Manchester United’s underwhelming performances since the turn of the year has led to fans calling for the players’ heads. With it being top-4 or bust for Solskjaer’s troops, the chopping block beckons for quite a few of those donning the famed red jersey. Let us have a look at the three players who Manchester United need to sell this summer:

#3: Alexis Sanchez

Injuries have plagued Sanchez during his time at United

Snatched from the noses of ‘Noisy Neighbours’ Manchester City, the signing of Chilean Alexis Sanchez was expected to catalyse Manchester United’s title challenge. Brought in amidst much fanfare, Sanchez has not managed to produce any performance of significance while taking to the field in the famed United kit. So much so that opposition fans have mockingly labelled his act on the piano during his presentation as his best performance in a Manchester United shirt.

The forward takes home a reported sum of £500,000-a-week for the drab showings that he puts up when he is fit to take the field. A miserable return of 3 goals and 6 assists in 32 Premier League appearances (over one and a half seasons) is hardly justified, given the money he takes home each week. Reported to be a disruptive presence in the dressing room, Sanchez has to be let go by United. His salary eats into a major chunk of the club’s treasuries which can be put to better use elsewhere.

The major complication that Ed Woodward and co. need to deal with is a lack of suitors for the ex-Arsenal man. Even the clubs that express interest in the winger are turned away by his wage demands. As days pass, the prospects of Sanchez leaving Old Trafford seem to diminish with yet another year of mediocrity with ‘mucho dinero’ beckoning for the Chile international.

#2: Ashley Young

Ashley Young seems to be 'getting old'
Ashley Young seems to be 'getting old'

Ashley Simon Young, who was signed for an estimated fee of €18 million from Aston Villa in 2011, is one of the few remnants of the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United. Over a period of 8 years, the Englishman has been a faithful servant to the club with him constantly giving it his all whenever given the chance to do so. The ultimate utility man, Young has been deployed in a variety of positions during his stint with the ‘red devils’.

With Antonio Valencia’s injury-enforced absence for a majority of last season and owing to lack of cover in the full-back positions, Young was forced to prove his mettle as a full-back. His performances, however, were substandard with both his defending and attacking outputs leaving much to be desired. Stationed in both the right and left-back positions, Young managed a paltry tackling success rate of 62% and a cross accuracy of 21%; figures which are not ideal for a defender. Managing 4 clean sheets in a United defence that totalled 7 on the whole, it is safe to say that his powers are on the wane.

With the club breaking the bank to add talented right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka to its ranks, Young’s position in the team is at threat. Adequate cover offered in the form of Portuguese Diogo Dalot has set the clock ticking on Young's United stint. The 34-year-old however, would make an excellent addition to any mid-table side and bring with him a wealth of experience and a winning mentality having won all domestic titles as a Manchester United player. So, it makes sense for both the club and player that the latter leaves Manchester United.

#1: Marcos Rojo

Snapped up following an excellent world cup campaign in 2014 where he was part of an Argentina team that went all the way up till the finals, Marcos Rojo was expected to lead a defence that had just lost three key figures in Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and Patrice Evra. Equally comfortable on the left and in the center of defence, the £16m purchase of the then Sporting CP player was predicted to be a bargain in the long run.

Rojo’s United career has sadly not panned out the way it was supposed to. Injury-prone and erratic, the Argentine could never earn an extended run in the starting 11. Five seasons at the club have only yielded 73 PL appearances with last season hitting the Estudiantes youth product the hardest for, he managed to make only 5 PL appearances. He even managed to play more games for his national team when compared to his club.

A decent operator on the ball, Rojo is far too rash and erratic to be a part of Solskjaer’s revolution. With the club pursuing Harry Maguire and with youth prospect Axel Tuanzebe set to be awarded more minutes, all doors point towards Marcos Rojo departing Old Trafford. It is now a question of who’s willing to match United’s evaluation and Rojo’s wages.
