Manchester United have taken a bold but reasonable step by sacking Jose Mourinho in the aftermath of a shambolic defeat against Liverpool. They are languishing in 6th on the league table, and have garnered only 26 points from 17 matches, having been poor throughout the season.

Former United player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is set to become the caretaker manager, as a new era is about to begin at Old Trafford.

However, poor management has only been a part of the plethora of problems United have been facing. Most of their players have performed below par, and need to step up their games in order to revive the fortunes of the club.

They have looked like a side completely devoid of creative ideas, and the appointment of a young manager could be a welcome change for them. Moreover, they need to offload some players from the squad, and try to bring in some new ones.

We take a look at 3 footballers United should purchase in the near future.

#1 Ivan Perisic

Perisic has been on United’s radar for quite a while now. He has been one of the world’s best wingers for the past few years. He is also one of the few players who have performed consistently for both his club and national team.

He was instrumental in making Croatia reach the final of the World Cup in 2018, as he scored 3 goals in the World Cup, including one in the final.

He has been a reliable player for his club Inter as well, for he has scored 33 goals in 135 matches for them. He usually plays on the left flank, but frequently cuts inside to play passes to the centre forward.

He also ventures into the opposition penalty box at times to meet crosses and score goals from them. He has enough speed and strength to trouble any defender in the world, and could be a great addition to the fast-paced football of Premier League.

United would need an agile footballer to play alongside Romelu Lukaku, as the latter is too slow to play as a lone front man. Perisic could be a very valuable addition to United’s attack.

#2 Saul Niguez

United have used a number of footballers in various combinations in their midfield, but are still having plenty of problems there. Nemanja Matic is too slow at times, and a poor passer. Ander Herrera has been too passive and inconsistent, whereas Paul Pogba has drawn more attention because of his off-field shenanigans than on-field exploits.

Niguez, the central midfielder of Spain and Atletico Madrid, could very well find a place in United’s troubled midfield.

Niguez can also play box-to-box, and has a knack for scoring goals. He usually hovers around the opposition penalty box at times to take those crucial shots at goal. He also falls back frequently to negate the attacking threats posed by the opposition team.

Niguez has scored 29 goals from 206 matches for Atletico, and is a regular starter for Spain now. He could very well provide the solidity and positivity United’s midfield so badly needs.

#3 Toby Alderweireld

Alderweireld is one of the finest centre-backs in the Premier League now, and could be signed to strengthen the vulnerable United defence. Mourinho has struggled to finalise a back 4 for his team, as none of the defenders seem to have provided the assurance and solidity while dealing with the forwards of opposition teams.

They wobbled against Liverpool too as Xherdan Shaqiri got enough space and time to take shots from outside the penalty box, and score a couple of goals.

Alderweireld is an excellent marker, and has very good anticipation and positional sense. He has already played 137 matches for Tottenham Hotspur in 5 seasons, and continues to be a regular starter for them.

He is also a consistent performer for the Belgian national side. Such a player should also be able to guide United’s defenders like Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, and Marcos Rojo, thereby solving their defensive problems. He has already been linked with United.
