Manchester United and Liverpool are the two most successful clubs in England. The rivalry these two clubs share is unparalleled. Bill Shankly once said that football is a matter of life and death and this famous quote embodies the true nature of this particular rivalry.

Only a handful of players have represented both Liverpool and Manchester United. The transfers have sparked outrage among both sets of supporters.

The last direct deal between these two clubs happened way back in 1964 when Phil Chisnall went Liverpool for £25,000. The rivalry was not fierce back then and it did not have any effect on Man Utd faithful.

Chisnall is surprised that no player has moved ever since the time he went to Liverpool. Bragging rights are at stake whenever these two historic clubs battle it out. Here are five players who played for both the rival clubs in their career.:

#1 Michael Owen

Michael Owen played a very important role in Liverpool's treble season (2001) and he also won himself the coveted Ballon d'Or that year. He attracted the interest from top clubs and Real Madrid snapped him up in 2004. He couldn't do much during his time at Madrid and the return to Premier League seemed imminent.

Newcastle United signed Owen but injuries had a much bigger say in his latter part of the career. Finally, Manchester United came calling when he was a free agent in 2009. Liverpool supporters have never forgiven him for the move. Owen scored 17 goals in 52 appearances for Manchester United.

Owen also won a Premier League medal with Manchester United and Liverpool fans loathe him even to this day. He probably is the most hated player among the players who played for liverpool and man utd.

#2 Paul Ince

Paul Ince also played for both the iconic clubs. He even celebrated after scoring a late equalizer against Manchester United in front of The Kop End. Man Utd signed Ince for £1 million. He made 281 appearances and scored 29 goals for the club.

He won the FA Cup and Premier League medals twice. Inter Milan signed Paul Ince, however, things did not turn out well. Subsequently, he was offloaded to Liverpool for £1 million. Seems to be some coincidence, eh? He scored 17 goals in 81 matches for Liverpool. He also became the only player to captain both Liverpool and Man Utd.

The former midfielder riled up Manchester United fans by celebrating a late equalizer in front of The Kop End.

#3 Peter Beardsley

Peter Beardsley not only played for Man Utd and Liverpool, he also represented Everton. Beardsley only played for Man Utd just once.

His old club Vancouver Whitecaps was the next stop for him. He only played 28 matches for Vancouver and came back to England that season only. He went to Newcastle United. It turned out to be a great idea; He scored 61 goals in 147 appearances.

Liverpool hunted and signed him for a record £1.9 million at that time. He scored 59 goals for Liverpool and became an instant Kop favourite. Later on in his career, he played for Everton.

#4 Tom Chorlton

Tom Chorlton's transfer from Liverpool to Manchester United was the first direct transfer between the two clubs way back in 1912. Born in Stockport, Chorlton was a traditional English defender. Chortlon represented a few clubs before Liverpool came calling. He played for Northern F.C, Accrington Stanley and Stockport County and All Saints F.C.

Liverpool's manager at that time Tom Watson had shown interest in the defender and did not take much time in signing the player. Tom Chorlton made 117 appearances for Liverpool and also scored 8 goals. In his time at Liverpool, he won Second Division title with Liverpool.

After representing Liverpool for almost 8 years, the time for his switch to a different club and it was none other than Manchester United. He signed for the club in 1912 just before the First World War.

Phil Chisnall's transfer from Manchester United to Liverpool was the last direct transfer which happened way back in 1964. Chisnall started his career with Manchester United and made 35 appearances for the club. He played as a forward and managed to score 8 goals during his time at the club. Sir Matt Busby was at Manchester United's helm at that time.

Chisnall then signed for Bill Shankly's Liverpool in 1964. That's when the rivalry had actually started to begin. Chisnall had some serious competition in the form of Ian St John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thomson.

He never quite got going and played a mere 6 times for The Reds. He netted just one goal and was subsequently sold to Southend United.
