#2 Marseille 0-4 Liverpool (2007-08)

This was Liverpool at their fearsome best.
This was Liverpool at their fearsome best.

Liverpool find themselves in a similar position to where they were eleven years ago. They had reached the Champions League final in the previous season and looked pretty solid in the Premier League. However, their European campaign was going off the rails due to a couple of poor performances against hostile opposition.

They had to win their final game against a team who beat them 1-0 earlier in the group, with the only difference being that the game in 2007-08 was away from home. Marseille was the big challenge in a must-win game, just like Napoli this time around.

The Reds took the task and grabbed it by the head, tearing the French side into pieces. They were 2-0 up inside the opening ten minutes, with goals from Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. The control from the five-time winners was evident in this straight-up all-or-nothing shootout of a game.

Second half goals from Dutch duo Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel rounded off the night in dominant fashion. If Liverpool play with this intensity and fire at Anfield on Tuesday, there is no doubt that they would be the ones awaiting the Round of 16 draw.
