#3 They lack a winger

Emery was reported to have a limited budget of around £70 million. While he has spent the budget wisely, his inability to clear the deadwood to raise funds for another quality player could have a lasting effect.

Players like Welbeck, Ospina, Jenkinson and Campbell were clearly surplus to the requirements and should have been sold to raise funds for a winger.

Ousmane Dembele was among those linked with a loan move to Arsenal, but that never materialized - leaving Arsenal's attacking style limited.

Dembele would have completed the jigsaw for Arsenal's attack

Considering Arsenal mostly attack from the middle of the park, a winger who can take on the defenders would have stretched the play and created gaps for the team to attack.

Manchester City used that very technique against Arsenal, employing Sterling and Mahrez wide. Both Sterling and Mahrez were able to run at Arsenal's fullback at will, and the match soon looked too easy for City.

Arsenal's fullback too could have benefited with a tricky winger in their squad to practise against. But until something changes, Arsenal will have to cope with what they have and what they have is barely enough to challenge for the top 4 - let alone the title.
