4 strikers Brighton should look to sign in January

Swansea City v Brighton and Hove Albion - Premier League

Brighton have taken many critics by surprise with an encouraging start to this season's Premier League campaign. Victories against the likes of West Brom and Swansea as well as a convincing away win at the hands of West Ham have given them hope that they will avoid a relegation battle and retain their top-flight status in the process.

However in recent matches, they have gradually started to slip down the table. With only 14 goals netted this term, the workload on players like Glenn Murray and Tomer Hemed is too significant to be relied upon on a regular basis.

The former has scored five already this season, which is impressive, but he needs more support in the final third.

Plenty of supporters are hoping that Chris Hughton signs a bonafide goalscorer who they can rely upon to finish chances and potentially reach double figures before the season's complete in May. They tried their utmost in the summer, right up until the transfer deadline, to no avail.

This time, they need to try again and hope they make the right acquisition that will boost them up the table and help ease their safety fears in the process.

#4 - Florin Andone (Deportivo)

Real Madrid CF v RC Deportivo La Coruna - La Liga
Florin Andone

Deportivo's Romanian forward was on Brighton's shortlist and the Seagulls are potentially still interested in the 24-year-old's services. He'd represent an excellent purchase and for around £20m in today's inflated market, he could also be a bargain at that price.

He was understood to have asked to leave Deportivo in the summer, as he was worried about a lack of minutes with Lucas Perez making his return from Arsenal on a season-long loan deal.

Andone would also bring international experience and an added edge to the side, having played for Romania at last summer's European Championships in France.

At the age of 24, he ultimately has plenty of time on his side. He would be able to immerse himself in England's top flight, bringing qualities to the Brighton squad which they are currently lacking in abundance and depth.

Florin is a striker with plenty of speed, one that is willing to turn and accelerate towards defenders, taking the game to them and being intent on causing problems for their backline.

Andone netted 12 goals for Deportivo in La Liga last season, but his playing style could be more suited to the Premier League - giving Brighton an effective alternative to their striking options at present.

#3 - Leo Baptistão (Espanyol)

RCD Espanyol v Real Sporting de Gijon - La Liga
Leo Baptistão

Signed by Espanyol last summer, Leo Baptistão is another striker that has been linked to Brighton according to talkSPORT.

The Brazilian would certainly bring an element of South American flair to the south Coast if he were to join. Despite not having the best goal-scoring record, he would still represent a worthwhile purchase.

He's able to hold the ball up as he has good ball control. This allows him to link up with other team-mates, helping to create opportunities for the team to score from.

Although he's not the most well-known striker either, he can also use this to his advantage. Somewhat of an unknown quantity to most defences in the top-flight, he could make a name for himself with impressive performances while potentially earning a senior Brazil call-up over time too.

#2 - Roberto Inglese (Chievo Verona)

US Sassuolo v AC Chievo Verona - Serie A
Roberto Inglese

Despite being also linked with a move to Napoli, this is a striker who Brighton ought to be monitoring. Currently playing for fellow Serie A side Chievo, he is clearly not going unnoticed by Italian sides.

The 6ft 1in forward is a clinical finisher, who regularly pounces on balls in and around the area. An aerial threat and one who also has great close control, he's scored seven goals in 16 appearances (one in Coppa Italia).

Inglese is already on target to pass his goal-scoring statistics from last season, where he scored ten in 34 matches. With an additional two assists this term, he has recorded a better shot on target percentage than Juventus' excellent forward Paulo Dybala - a sign of his ongoing improvements.

Brighton should be looking to make an approach for him, as he'd represent a more mobile target man and could continue his goal-scoring form to lessen the load on Murray too.

#1 - Fydor Smolov (FC Krasnodar)

Russia vs Spain - International Friendly
Fydor Smolov

This striker is certainly setting the world alight in Russia. Fydor Smolov has earned himself a call-up to Russia's senior side for his performances, both in the past and at present.

Despite making his debut in November 2012, he's scored 11 goals in 28 appearances for his country. Having featured during their friendly draw against Spain, he captained the side and netted a brace against La Roja - who started Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos in central defence, their strongest pairing.

An impressive display, he'll be hoping for more of those against better opposition in future. This season alone, he has already scored 10 goals in Russia's Premier Liga, having made 13 appearances.

He appears on course to beat his scoring record of 18 goals in 22 matches from last season, which will further reinforce the ability to continually finish chances on a consistent basis.

Known for his rather emphatic finishes, he's capable of timing his runs to perfection when advancing forward into the final third. Brighton would be wise to have a look at the 27-year-old, who could definitely help contribute in attack.
