5 great players who have struggled against specific teams

Chelsea FC v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg
Messi after scoring his first career goal against Chelsea

On Tuesday night, Lionel Messi once again played against Chelsea and most of the fans were wondering if he would be able to score against Chelsea finally. Before this game, Messi had played 8 games, amounting to 655 minutes against Chelsea.

Taking 29 shots, he failed to convert a single shot but it all changed when he finally scored an equalizing goal against them in Champions League round of 16. Thus, we thought this is the right time to discuss some other players who have always struggled against particular teams:

#5 Cristiano Ronaldo vs Chelsea (15 matches, 1 goal)

Manchester United v Chelsea - UEFA Champions League Final
Ronaldo has struggled against Chelsea but he has scored most important goal against them

Lionel Messi always remained on the radar of many people for not scoring against Chelsea but he has finally scored against them. Keeping in mind that scoring 1 goal in 9 games is not a huge achievement for Messi, we should also take a note on Ronaldo's record against Chelsea.

Ronaldo is one of the best goalscorers in the history of football but he too, has always struggled against Chelsea. He has played 15 games against Chelsea, scoring just 1 goal.

said that, we should keep in mind that his only goal against Chelsea came in the final of UEFA Champions League in 2008, which was enough to help Manchester United lift the trophy.

#4 Francesco Totti vs English clubs (20 matches, 2 goals)

AS Roma v AC Cesena - TIM Cup
Totti has scored only 2 games against English Opponents

Roma talisman Francesco Totti is an absolute club legend and during his time at Roma, he broke many records. There was only one thing that always pained his fans and it was the fact that Totti struggled to score against English sides.

He has played 4 games each against Arsenal, Manchester United and Leeds, 2 games each against Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Chelsea, making it total 20 games.

In 1999, Totti scored a goal against Newcastle United in the UEFA Super Cup but it took him almost 14 years to score his next goal against an English Club.

He scored an equalizing goal against Manchester City in 2014 during the UEFA Champions League group stage, and it was his first goal in England. Maybe he wasn't planning to score, but this tweet by Manchester City might just have provoked him.

#3 Robert Lewandowski vs Borussia Mönchengladbach (12 matches, 1 goal)

RSC Anderlecht v Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League
Lewandowski always performs poor against Borussia Mönchengladbach

Robert Lewandowski has the great goal-per-game ratio in the Bundesliga, but he has always struggled to score against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Polish international's presence is enough to scare away the opponents but Borussia Mönchengladbach somehow, always managed to keep him quiet.

Not scoring goals is one thing, but what should concern him, is the fact that his overall performance also drops while playing against this particular German side.

In his last 8 appearances (2 with Borussia Dortmund, and 6 with Bayern Munich), his team won only 2 games while losing 4 games.

#2 Ronaldinho vs Celtic (6 matches, 0 goals)

Barcelona v Inter Milan - Gamper Trophy
Ronaldinho never scored against Celtic

While playing for Spanish giants Barcelona, Ronaldinho had zero goals in 6 games against Celtic. The football genius has changed the gravity of matches single-handedly many times but he has always struggled against Celtic.

Ronaldinho's trophy cabinet is filled with a Ballon d’Or, the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, the Copa America and a multitude of league titles, but he has now retired, leaving one team on the list against which he failed to score throughout his career - Celtic.

#1 Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs Real Madrid (7 matches, 1 goal)

Real Madrid CF v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored only one goal against Real Madrid

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of the most entertaining footballers in the world - on and off the pitch. Known for his spectacular goals and his witty quotes, the big muscular man has struggled to show his skill-set against Real Madrid on most of the occasions.

The Swedish international has played against Madrid on 7 occasions. He has played 2 times with PSG, 2 times with Milan, and 3 three times with Barcelona.

He may have scored only one goal against Real Madrid but the significance of that goal was undeniable, as he came off the bench for Barcelona to score the winner in an El Clasico.
