#3 Kleberson
Brazilian footballer Kleberson turned heads for the Selecao with his performances at the 2002 World Cup. Brazil manager Luis Felipe Scolari even described Kleberson as the main driving force behind the team's triumphant run in the World Cup. The youngster was already growing in reputation as a promising, dynamic central midfielder.
Being one of the quieter and more inexperienced players in the squad where the limelight was always on the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, Kleberson still stood out and was one of the best players in the final against Germany. In fact, he provided the assist for Ronaldo's second goal of the game.
It then made a lot of sense for Manchester United to try to bring him in as part of a grander scheme where the ultimate goal was to sign Ronaldinho. However, after being convinced to join Manchester United by Ronaldinho, the latter went on to join Barcelona, leaving Kleberson, who didn't speak any English, to fend for himself in the cold of Manchester United.
Kleberson suffered an injury in his second outing for Manchester United. Upon his return, he did produce a handful of impressive performances, including providing three assists in a game against Aston Villa, but his erratic nature and lack of ability to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League acted as stumbling blocks to his development.
In midfield, he only ever struck a good partnership with Nicky Butt, who could play as the defensive anchorman, allowing Kleberson to play his preferred box-to-box role.. But that partnership wasn't afforded the time to flourish either.
Add his constant injury problems to the mix and before long it was apparent that Kleberson's potential wouldn't be realized at the Theater of Dreams and after two seasons at Manchester United, he was offloaded to Besiktas.
#2 Eric Djemba Djemba
By now you would have got the sense that between 2002 and 2005 when Arsenal and Chelsea were getting set to go shoulder to shoulder with Manchester United and becoming huge threats in the transfer market, Sir Alex Ferguson made quite a few bad decisions. He was after value-for-money and often ended up without getting any.
Eric Djemba Djemba is one of the biggest transfer flops in Manchester United's history. Djemba Djemba was brought in to fill the void left by the charismatic and divisive Manchester United captain Roy Keane. However, the Cameroonian endured an extremely difficult time at Manchester United and failed to establish himself in the Premier League.
Djemba Djemba loved a life of excesses and his billionaire lifestyle caught up with him and he was declared bankrupt in 2007. Thankfully for Manchester United, that happened a couple of years after he was offloaded just 18 months after he was signed.
#1 Juan Sebastian Veron
This one still stings. Juan Sebastian Veron was easily one of the most talented central midfielders of his generation. When Manchester United paid £28.1 million to sign him from Lazio, it looked like money well-spent and the Stretford End couldn't wait to see him on the field.
Even though Manchester United won the Premier League in the second season that Veron played at Old Trafford, it was clear as day that the Argentinian was struggling to cope with the pace of the game in England and failed to become a mainstay in the Manchester United starting XI.
It's heartbreaking because Veron started his Manchester United stint off on a spectacular note, scoring three goals in four appearances and being awarded the Premier League Player of the Month Award for September 2001. He was also very effective in Europe where he excelled thanks to the slower pace of the matches.
Sir Alex Ferguson once defended Veron and called the media idiots- with expletives for added flavour for calling him a transfer flop. However, Fergie realized soon enough that Veron wouldn't make the grade at Manchester United and they moved him on next summer for £15 million to Chelsea.
