Tottenham and Manchester United have both been Premier League clubs since the inception of the league in 1992/93. The former have risen to prominence after a low key decade or two since the Premier League's inception and have challenged for the League title in the last two seasons.

Manchester United in the same period enjoyed three different spells of absolute dominance, interrupted only by Arsenal and Chelsea and more recently Manchester City. Since the turn of this decade, United have grown off the pitch exponentially and dominated the League, but after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, they are yet to taste Premier League success. Jose Mourinho is the latest manager tasked with restoring United to the top.

Despite not troubling each other for places, survival or dominance until the last three seasons, Spurs and United have had some memorable clashes. Some were goal-scoring master-classes while others were dull but a tale of resilience in themselves.

The matches between the two clubs in the Premier League era have unsurprisingly seen Manchester United winning a vast majority of the games. The tide has become more even recently as Spurs have closed the gap between them. The last seven games have seen three wins apiece and a draw, suggesting that this weekend could be in for a very interesting game even without taking in to account the Premier League table.

In this list, we take a look at five memorable Tottenham vs Manchester United clashes in Premier League history.

United's players regroup after Rooney pulled one back in the 70th min

This game is extra-special for Spurs fans. The last home game of the 2016/17 season saw Tottenham emerging winners with Harry Kane and Victor Wanayama scoring for the last time at White Hart Lane.

Though the new stadium is going to be at the same location, fans, players and the manager said goodbye in style to the old structure which had served as the home from 1899. Their last memory of the stadium will forever be the victory over Manchester United. This victory also signalled their 14th home win of the season and ensure they remained unbeaten at home for the first time since 1964-65.

Spurs confirmed the second spot in the league after the victory and Manchester United managed a goal from Wayne Rooney but offered little else in the clash. The match witnessed another great performance from United Goalkeeper David de Gea.

Though the match on its own was not very special, it was important because of the ramifications surrounding it. Manchester United were also attempting to climb the table but Spurs ensured that only they would be celebrating on the last day at their grand old home.

Chris Armstrong

Another great game in the midst of perhaps one of the most incredible seasons in Premier League history.

The sides met on New Year's Day in 1996. The Spurs board had come under constant criticism for selling players like Jurgen Klinnsman and Nick Barmby despite having finished the season at 7th place. Their manager was mocked for having paid about £4.5m for striker Chris Armstrong

Manchester United had finished second in the league the previous season, losing the title to Blackburn. Their manager, Sir Alex, responded by tearing the side and introducing a host of youngsters to the side. By Christmas, they had found themselves well adrift of leaders Newcastle United, though.

There was no joy for them on New Year's Day in North London. 32,852 people witnessed Chris Armstrong and Teddy Sheringham shred Manchester United, putting four goals past their keeper. Armstrong scored a brace while Sheringham and club captain Sol Campbell scoring one apiece.

Manchester United managed one strike from Andy Cole as they were dominated on the pitch.

This game at Old Trafford was very special for Tottenham. Going into the match, newly appointed manager Andres Vilas-Boas led his Spurs side into the game having won the previous two games on the bounce.

Manchester United, who had lost the title in the last minute of the season the previous year, began the match having just beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the previous game and were on a four-game winning streak.

Jonny Evans gave United scored an own goal in the 2nd minuted to give United a terrible start. Gareth Bale then made matters worse when he scored past De Gea in the 32nd minute after a darting run. The hosts responded early in the second half and managed to reduce the deficit in the 51st minute through Nani.

Though Manchester United had the momentum, Clint Dempsey managed to find the third for Spurs as he was unmarked and scored from a Gareth Bale shot that had been deflected. Shinji Kagawa managed to score in the 53rd minute, slotting into the bottom corner.

With more than 30 minutes left, many presumed United would complete the comeback, but Spurs held on for the rest of the game to record their first ever win at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Premier League era making this win extra special.

#2 Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Manchester United (White Hart Lane, 2009/10)

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - Premier League
Rio Ferdinand keeps Defoe at bay

Another White Hart Lane fixture, but not one the Nort Londoners will remember fondly. Harry Redknapp's side started with a familiar 4-4-2 with Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe led the line for Spurs and just 38 seconds in, Defoe produced superb overhead kick to put Spurs ahead for the fastest goal of the season.

Peter Crouch's height and Defoe's pace made it difficult for United defence as they tried to cope with the physical challenge of the Spurs forward line.

In the 24th minute, however, Ryan Giggs scored a free-kick and levelled matters. Manchester United then controlled the game and their constant pressing paid off as Anderson scored from a poor clearance by Ledley King.

Tottenham still kept trying hard to regain parity but failed to make too much progress. They were given another opening when Paul Scholes, captaining United, was sent off after a second yellow card for a challenge on Tom Huddlestone. The Red Devils held on to their slender lead though and Wayne Rooney scored from a brilliant ball from the right wing to make it 3-1, completing another amazing comeback under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Probably one of the most famous games of the Premier League era, Spurs took on United at home armed with new signing Dean Richards, making his debut after a £8 million move from Southampton.

United were pegged back early on as Spurs managed to get three goals courtesy of. Debutant Richards, former Newcastle man Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege. The home fans were jubilant and they had not allowed the United defence an inch through the first 45 minutes. Little did they know at the time that it would be a game of two halves.

Sir Alex Ferguson's infamous hair-dryer treatment changed the way Manchester United approached the game in the second half. Teddy Sheringham, the Spurs captain in that game, warned his teammates to be on their toes against his former side. It seems they had not been paying attention to their skipper.

Manchester United scored an incredible five goals in 45 minutes to celebrate at the end of the 90 minutes. Andy Cole scored in the 46th minute as soon as the match resumed and Laurent Blanc scored his only Manchester United league goal in the 58th minute from a corner.

In the 72nd minute, after some brilliant attacking play, Ruud Van Nistelrooy finally equalled matters from a Mikel Silvestre cross. The disgruntled Spurs defence watched almost helplessly as Juan Sebastian Veron scored a fourth in the 76th minute.

Spurs couldn't do much as Solskjaer slalomed past two defenders on the left wing and crossed back to David Beckham, who found himself unmarked with acres of space at the edge of the box. He whacked the ball from a half-volley into the corner of the net completing one of the most scintillating turnarounds in the Premier League era.
