5 moments which caught our eye in Champions League gameweek 3

Real Madrid v Tottenham Hotspur - UEFA Champions League
Two players who went head to head this midweek

Champions League has always seen the best brand of football being played in the world and gameweek 3 was no exception. Right from Real Madrid's entertaining match-up with Tottenham Hotspur to Chelsea's pulsating 3-3 draw with AS Roma, these midweek games were absolutely brilliant, to say the least.

Liverpool created a bit of history whereas Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi also had a hand in some fine individual feats. All that and a lot more will be discussed in the five moments from this week's Champions League which caught our eye:

#5 Kylian Mbappe becomes the highest-scoring teenager in the history of the competition

RSC Anderlecht v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League
Mbappe now has 8 goals in 12 Champions League matches

The French sensation just cannot seem to stay away from the limelight! In PSG's 4-0 win over Anderlecht, Mbappe got on the scoresheet as he scored his side's second goal of the night. In doing that, Mbappe became the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history beating the record previously held by Patrick Kluivert during his time with Ajax.

Mbappe has already scored eight goals in twelve appearances in Europe and with 14 months to go for his 20th birthday, the teenager can make this feat his own for a long, long time. Kluivert managed seven goals in two seasons for Ajax whereas Karim Benzema is third on the list with six goals for Lyon before turning 20.

The other two in this elite list have won the Champions League in their top-flight career which increases the responsibility on the shoulders of the player considered to be the future of PSG. No pressure, kid!

#4 Manchester United display great sportsmanship

SL Benfica v Manchester United - UEFA Champions League
Sportsman spirit at its heartfelt best

In a match where history was made by Benfica by fielding the youngest ever goalkeeper in the form of Mile Svilar, it was the same 18-year-old custodian whose costly mistake decided the outcome of the game. A freekick from over 40 yards was taken by Marcus Rashford which was caught by Svilar but who could not keep it off the line as he was backtracking.

The youngster was absolutely distraught after the final whistle and was close to being in tears. Romelu Lukaku went over to his countryman Svilar and gave him a heartfelt talk to boost his confidence.

The striker also gave him a tight embrace while the other United team members also joined in to console Svilar. The mistake against United would be a huge learning curve for the highly rated goalkeeper but the gesture by the United players would have surely eased some disappointment for the teenager.

#3 Liverpool mark a historic win

Liverpool v Manchester United - Premier League
Liverpool earned a historic win in Slovenia

Winning their first match in eight games, Liverpool did that in an emphatic manner by hammering Maribor 7-0 at the latter's home turf. This mega scoreline victory was not only pleasing on the eye for Jurgen Klopp but it also created a number of records.

The 7-0 rout by Liverpool is the biggest margin of victory for an English club away from home in Europe (this includes the European Cup as well).

This is also the joint highest away win in the history of the competition. Marseille and Shakhtar Donetsk are the other leaders on this list. On top of that, Liverpool also became the first English side to score four first-half goals away from half in Europe. This means that Liverpool now have the biggest margin win in Europe; home and away.

Home: Liverpool 8-0 Besiktas

Away: Maribor 0-7 Liverpool

All aboard the Jurgen train!

#2 Tottenham Hotspur's gutsy display at the home of the champions

Real Madrid v Tottenham Hotspur - UEFA Champions League
Spurs won respect with their performance against Real Madrid

Santiago Bernabeu has never been a happy hunting ground for English teams. Only two teams (Arsenal 2006, Liverpool 2009) have managed to beat Los Blancos at their fortress.

The last time Spurs visited Real Madrid, they received a fine beating and lost 4-0. But this time around, Spurs not only earn a point from their trip to Spain, the Lilywhites had a proper go at the champions and even had their chances to win the game.

Along with some brilliant individual performances (Hugo Lloris and Harry Winks, take a bow!), it was Pochettino's tactical adaptability which earned deserved plaudits.

The Argentine likes to have possession and dominate proceedings but as shown against Borussia Dortmund, Spurs decided to play in a 5-3-2 formation, let their opponents have the ball and then transition swiftly in counter-attacks. Madrid looked second best at times in the game and it was down to their opponents being positioned to perfection by their manager.

#1 Another match, another Leo Messi record

FC Barcelona v Olympiakos Piraeus - UEFA Champions League
Lionel Messi scored his 100th European goal against Olympiakos

A match where FC Barcelona had to labour until the 60th minute to register a goal by one of their own players, Lionel dazzled for the Catalans in the second half to win 3-0 against Olympiakos.

Scoring the second goal of the night, Messi scored a superb freekick to bag his 100th career goal in European competition. He becomes the second player in the history to achieve this feat after Cristiano Ronaldo. But Messi has scored 100 in 122 games whereas Ronaldo took 143 matches to reach the three-figure mark.

Out of 100, 97 of Messi's European goals have come in the Champions League whereas the remaining three have been scored in the UEFA Super Cup. 82 of those have been scored from the left foot whereas 14 from his weaker right foot. The 100 goals include 4 headed goals, 11 penalties and 5 free kicks. Also, as many as 16 have been scored by the 'Messiah' from outside the box.

With a goal against Olympiakos, Messi has taken his tally to 15 this season with "Messidependencia" being prevalent more than ever at FC Barcelona.
