The BVB, after claiming just one point from their last five games, entered this game fiercely as they sought to overcome their poor form.
Shortly after the kickoff, it looked like Peter Bosz's men were in for an easy ride. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang put the hosts ahead in just 12 minutes before an acrobatic own goal from Stambouli doubled their lead.
Further goals from Mario Gotze and Raphael Guerreiro ensured that the hosts took a perfect 4-0 lead into half-time.

The second half began with Schalke 04 coming out from a new dimension. Guido Burgstaller and Harit scored two goals within four minutes to bring their team back into the tie.
Dortmund started losing their confidence and things got worse for the hosts when Aubameyang was sent off in the 72nd minute after picking up two yellows.
This inspired the visitors and they attacked vigorously. Daniel Caligiuri struck in the 86th minute while Naldo finished the job with a fantastic header in the closing minute to conclude a fantastic derby at the Signal Iduna Park.
