Mascherano was sent off in the first half

Manchester United were on top of the table when they took on Liverpool on March 23, 2008, at Old Trafford.

It was a tight first half hour but United had the edge going forward, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo.

A Wayne Rooney cross from the left flank found Wes Brown in the box, with the Englishman heading the ball in the net to give his side the lead.

Just before halftime, Javier Mascherano received his second yellow card for dissent. His first booking was for a mistimed sliding challenge on Paul Scholes.

With the added advantage of the extra man, the Red Devils possessed a greater deal of threat in attack with a flurry of chances being created in the second half.

However, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was up for the challenge and made some great saves to keep the scoreline to only one goal.

A corner in the 79th minute was headed in by Ronaldo into an open goal as Reina was at fault for coming off his line and failing on his attempt at punching the ball before it was met by the head of United's No.7.

Two minutes later, Nani finished off his chance from a Rooney pass to make it 3-0.

The Premier League leaders deservingly triumphed as they outshone Rafa Benitez's side in every aspect of the game.

The Reds were poor throughout as they finished the game with only one shot on target and a pass completion rate of just 70%.
