Liverpool came into this fixture on the back of some great form. They were playing some entertaining football, scoring goals and causing trouble to the opposing defences with their attacking duo of Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Meanwhile, it was proving to be a very painful season for Manchester United, as they were struggling under new manager David Moyes and were languishing in seventh in the table.

Rafael was the culprit of conceding a penalty in the 33rd minute when he handled the ball and the resulting spot-kick was converted by Gerrard to give his side the lead.

United looked lacklustre but came close to scoring when a Rooney shot was saved by Simon Mignolet.

Things got worse for the home side when Phil Jones bumped into Joe Allen from behind and a penalty was awarded which was scored by Gerrard to double the lead.

Later, in the second half, a third penalty was given away by the United defence when Nemanja Vidic lunged onto a lighting quick Sturridge and was shown a yellow card for arguing with the referee.

However, the Liverpool captain could not complete his hattrick as he hit the post from his spot kick.

Despite the penalty miss, United did not have much threat going forward and all the chances were being created by Liverpool. However, Suarez scored late into the game from a shot-cum assist of Sturridge to seal an emphatic 3-0 win.

Moyes' team were poor in front of goal as they were able to register only one shot on target.

This win was the culmination of an excellent season for the Merseysiders, as they finished second in the league, narrowly missing out on the Premier League title by just one point and as for United, they finished at seventh place with only 64 points.
