For some of the world's bigger teams, failing to win a league or cup can be considered a disaster. High standards mean clubs at the top of the game would regard a relatively average season as an utter failure.

But dig a bit deeper and you'll find teams that failed spectacularly, with squads so outrageously bad they could barely pick up a point.

The reasons behind these failures can be interesting too, ranging from financial problems to lack of a home stadium. Whatever the story, it can be morbidly fascinating to watch a team absolutely incapable of earning themselves a win, or even a draw in some cases.

From across the world, here are five clubs who endured some of the worst seasons in football history.

#5 Derby County 2007-08

Derby County won promotion to the Premier League for the 2007-08 season after a six-year spell outside the top flight. Whilst there were some concerns that the club was not investing heavily enough into the playing squad, summer signings included legendary former Celtic striker Kenny Miller and prolific Norwich forward Claude Davis.

Few would have expected the terrible season Derby were in for. In November, manager Billy Davies departed the club, having amassed only six points from 14 games, and replacement Paul Jewell failed to turn things around.

Derby were officially relegated in March with six games of the season remaining and ended the season with a pitiful total of 11 points, having won only once all season. The record still stands as the worst Premier League points tally of all time.

#4 Brechin City 2017-18

Brechin City were a victim of their own success in 2017-18. Having earned promotion to the Scottish Championship via a surprise playoff win, Brechin were one of only two part-time clubs in a full-time league.

Unable to compete with their more illustrious opponents, Brechin tallied a measly four points in the entirety of the season, finishing 26 points behind fellow part-timers Dumbarton. From 36 games, Brechin scored 20 goals and conceded 90 and gained the dubious distinction of becoming the first club in 126 years to fail to register a win over an entire season.

Unfortunately for Brechin, the nightmare wasn't over. They suffered a second consecutive relegation the following season, finishing bottom of Scottish League One, although they did at least manage nine wins.

#3 Gibraltar Phoenix 2013-14

Newly promoted Gibraltar Phoenix only had to play a 14-game season in 2013-14, and they could count themselves lucky as their misery was at least kept to a minimum. In the games they did play, Phoenix conceded 94 goals and scored only 9 in response, failing to pick up so much as a point.

More than a third of these goals were scored by Lincoln Red Imps who put 32 past Phoenix over two games played in the same week.

It was always going to be a tough season for Phoenix, who lost a large part of their squad during the close season and were unable to source replacements from the limited pool of players on the island.

Three years later, Phoenix made their return to Gibraltar's top flight and earned their first points with a win on the opening day of the season, ensuring they would not face such a humiliation for a second time.

#2 Chernomorets Burgas Sofia 2006/07

Bulgarian side Chernomorets Burgas Sofia set a series of new records in the 2006/07 season when they actually managed to finish the season with a negative points tally.

Across 30 games, they managed a pathetic eight goals, conceding 131 in the process. The club had been bought out and renamed shortly before the season began, and life under their new moniker got off to a terrible start when they were deducted three points before the season even began after failing to register a sufficient number of youth players.

Chernomorets were initially based in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia but quickly abandoned plans to operate out of the national stadium due to a lack of finances. Instead, they played every game at opposition club's stadiums.

The highlight of the season was a 0-0 draw against Litex Lovex, which proved to be the only point the club would gain all season. At the end of the campaign, the club suffered a double relegation after failing to fulfill second-tier licensing requirements.

#1 Antigua Barracuda 2013

Antigua Barracuda were an interesting outfit. Formed in 2010 with the goal of strengthening the Antigua & Barbuda national team, the club chose to play outside the country, competing in the United Soccer League, a US third-tier competition.

Poor crowds and financial difficulties plagued Barracuda throughout their existence, but the problems came to a head in 2013 when the club announced that due to poor crowds at their converted cricket stadium home, Barracuda would become a traveling team playing all games away from home.

Barracuda were forced to function on a shoestring budget, with the team operating out of hotels and spending long hours in minibusses traveling to games up and down America.

It went as badly as expected. Antigua Barracuda lost each and every one of the 26 games they played that season, becoming the first professional club in history to fail to register a single point, and finishing the campaign with a goal difference of -80.

Barracuda folded at the end of 2013, ensuring that their famously bad season would be their last.
