5 players Barcelona should target this summer

Two top-quality players set for multiple offers this summer..

It has been yet another great La Liga campaign for Barcelona, romping to their third title in four years without losing a single game at the time of writing. However, the one trophy that has eluded them is the UEFA Champions League as they were knocked out by an unbelievable second-leg comeback by AS Roma in the quarter-finals.

There are murmurs that Ernesto Valverde might choose not to extend his reign at the Camp Nou to a second season despite reports that he will not be sacked. This may force Josep Maria Bartomeu to search for another manager, just a year after completing a three-year deal.

Whether the man in charge changes in Catalonia over the summer remains to be seen, but here are five players the Spanish giants should target in the coming months:

#5 Anthony Martial

Brighton and Hove Albion v Manchester United - Premier League
Martial has struggled for regular minutes this term, but has shown signs of world-class potential

The €105m signing of Ousmane Dembélé last summer hasn't turned out how the player nor club would have expected and it's now understood that Arsenal are seriously interested in the Frenchman.

Patience with the 20-year-old has run thin and his long-term future at the Nou Camp, despite his promise, is in major doubt after just one season.

With frustrating increasing at a lack of minutes in Manchester, Martial would prove a perfect replacement for his compatriot. Having scooped the Golden Boy award in 2015, it's been tough for the former Monaco forward to break into Jose Mourinho's United side which could force him to look elsewhere away from England's top-flight.

He could play as a wideman in support of Lionel Messi or Luis Suárez, or in the number nine role as an additional forward option to the Uruguayan in attack.

If Barcelona expressed their interest in Martial, they are set to face stiff competition from Champions League semi-finalists Juventus, who have been linked with his signature all season.

#4 Matthijs de Ligt

Previews - UEFA Europa League Final

Just like with Dembélé, this one would be more for replacement purposes. Samuel Umtiti appears to be edging closer towards a lucrative switch to Manchester United - which could also benefit any deal for Martial.

Ajax have had to settle for second place in this season's Eredivisie but without Matthijs de Ligt in their backline, they may have had to accept UEFA Europa League football instead.

The teenage centre-back has played 31 of their 33 league fixtures, captaining the side on three occasions during their end of season run-in.

de Ligt's impact has certainly not gone unnoticed and he could be rewarded with the Eredivisie Player of the Year accolade, which many believe he deserves. This has turned heads amongst some of Europe's heavyweights and it will be quite a surprise if the 18-year-old is still in Amsterdam come September.

He would slot in as a perfect long-term replacement for Umtiti and potentially even Gerard Pique, who at 31, will not have many more years at the top of his game. However, replacing the latter would not be the aim if de Ligt was signed - as he himself is not yet the finished article.

A more mature defender would be required to fill, what will be, a huge void when Pique eventually leaves.

#3 Toby Alderweireld

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Alderweireld is in high demand

This is the big name that would have to be signed to justify taking Pique's position in Barcelona's backline. The best thing about a potential attempt to prise Toby Alderweireld away from Tottenham is that he's reportedly willing to leave north London due to Spurs' wage cap policy.

There are some very strong rumours linking the towering centre-back to other Premier League sides, as well as European giants too. Very few can boast the negotiating power of Barcelona, whose quality across the squad is tempting for potential acquisitions.

The offer of regular first-team football would have to be made, as that would be guaranteed elsewhere too. Weekly salary too would also need to be matched by the Catalans to present the best possible offer to the Belgium international.

#2 Christian Eriksen

Brighton and Hove Albion v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Eriksen has scored 10 and created 11 assists in England's top-flight this term

One of the most under-rated players of the Premier League era and one who has helped numerous others to reach their respective peaks - Harry Kane in particular - Christian Eriksen is certainly a midfielder that Barcelona should look to target.

With Andres Iniesta's emotional farewell from his boyhood club just a matter of weeks away now, this move would make sense.

Just like Alderweireld, the Danish international is stuck in a Tottenham system where big-money contracts are not on the table and this could easily play into the hands of possible suitors across Europe monitoring their respective situations.

He would fit in well with Barca's passing football ethos perfectly, given his fantastic passing range and ability to create chances regularly too. Unlike the other players mentioned, there does not seem to be much competition for Eriksen's signature, which is surprising given another impressive campaign on a personal level.

Naturally, he will not come cheap but there's potential for his head to be turned with a bumper deal elsewhere. The devastating blow of Iniesta's departure could be easily lessened with the arrival of a player of Eriksen's ability.

#1 Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid v Arsenal FC - UEFA Europa League Semi Final Second Leg
Griezmann played an instrumental role during Atletico's semi-final victory over Arsenal recently

This is a player widely considered as one of the world's best and while links to Barcelona may appear far-fetched to some fans, there is some truth in the rumours.

With an £89m buyout clause in his contract, Antoine Griezmann is definitely affordable for a side like Barca and would complete a deadly attacking trio alongside Suárez and Messi. He could line up on either wing or as a string alongside the Uruguayan with the pint-sized magician playing in a free-roam role behind the pair.

Many fans have said that prising the French forward away from Atletico would be the main obstacle - but talk of a move away from the Spanish capital arose a few years ago when Griezmann himself said he wouldn't rule out a big-money transfer in future.

The main competition for his signature will come from Jose Mourinho's Manchester United, but the Red Devils don't appear as desperate to sign him as they reportedly were last summer. With that in mind, this could pave the way for Bartomeu to secure a deal for one of Europe's hottest stars.
