5 players Manchester United should sign this summer

Big changes?

Despite reaching the semi-finals of the FA cup and currently in the second position in the Premier League, United have often been accused of a boring and defensive approach.

Having been unable to mount a serious title challenge since the 2012/13 season, both manager and club are on the lookout for new additions to help change United’s fortunes. With manager Jose Mourinho visibly dissatisfied with his squad, here are five players who could add some serious firepower to the United ranks.

#5 - Jorginho

Jorginho is on the radar of several Premier League clubs

Much of United’s tepid and slow build-up play has been due to a lack of a deep-lying playmaker, which could be addressed by Jorginho. The diminutive yet dynamic Italian international is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Serie A.

During the 2016-17 season, Jorginho averaged 98 passes per game, the highest in Europe’s top five leagues, with an accuracy of 92.6%. With an average of 2.3 tackles and 2 interceptions per game, he would be an ideal choice to line up in a three-man midfield alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

#4 Ryan Sessegnon

With Luke Shaw’s marriage with Manchester United has reached a point of no return and Jose Mourinho could possibly be in search of a new left-back.

Fulham's 17- year- old wonder-kid, who has been in scintillating form with 14 goals in the Championship this year, is regarded by many to have world-class potential. Comfortable in attack and defence, Sessegnon, is also capable of playing on the wing and would bring creativity and purpose down the left flank.

Though relatively young, Sessegnon still has scope for improvement, especially with his defensive contribution and passing. His pure talent though is unquestionable.

#3 Raphael Varane

An ever-present wall in Real Madrid’s defensive line, Raphael Varane is regarded by pundits and fans alike, as one of the best centre-backs in the world. Being strong aerially, quick, and having good distribution, are only a few reasons, that would allow him to thrive in the Premier League.

A move would also allow him to link up with his ex-boss, Jose Mourinho who signed him during his stint at Real and played a key role in his development. He and Eric Bailly at the heart of the defence will give United the solidity they need at the back.

#2 Toby Alderweireld

Though a formidable warrior in the Premier League for the past three seasons, injury has curtailed Toby Alderweireld’s progress this season. With the Belgian stalling on a new contract, a transfer away is more than likely.

Manchester United are being touted a possible destination for the 29-year-old. He would be a perfect partner to Eric Bailly and would also contribute to the much-needed experience.

#1 Willian

Mourinho and Willian had a successful time together

Mourinho has repeatedly stated that he will not consider signing attacking players in the upcoming summer transfer window. However, an exception could be made for Chelsea star Willian.

A lot of United’s attacking problems have come from their lack of natural width and flair on the right wing. These issues could be easily rectified by the Brazilian who has been enjoying a prolific season with 13 goals already.

The close bond he shares with Mourinho, whom he fondly refers to as “friend”, highlights the mutual respect between player and coach, from their two years spent together. His remarkable dribbling, high work rate and effectiveness as a set piece taker, make him a typical Mourinho player.
