The Indian Super League is in its fourth season and many players have used the league as a stepping stone to have successful careers. But some players have lost their place in the national squad due to poor form in the league. Let's have a look at some players who could lose their place in the national team due to poor performances in this season of the ISL.

#5 Rowllin Borges

Borges made 58 appearances for Sporting Goa in his five-year stint at the club. In 2016, he was signed by Northeast United and went to East Bengal on loan. He has won around 15 caps for the national team in the last two years.

After missing the first few games due to injury, Borges has made a comeback to be a part of a Northeast team that has let in 12 goals in seven games while scoring only two in reply. There was a lot of responsibility on Borges' shoulders and he has let down his team with only 12 successful tackles in five matches, fewer tackles than three of his teammates, even though one of those has played fewer matches than Borges. Furthermore, he also has only seven interceptions to his name in five matches.

Borges has been in poor form and could be replaced in the national squad by Adil Khan who has been excellent for the Pune side in the ISL. Adil made three appearances for the senior side in 2012 and could make a comeback after six long years.

#4 Halicharan Narzary

Narzary started his career with the Palian Arrows making only 33 appearances for them in a span of four years. He then moved on to Dempo, making 27 appearances for them while scoring only one goal. Since 2014, he has had stints with FC Goa and Northeast United in the ISL where he wasn't able to even open his scoring account.

He was selected for the Indian national team on the back of fine performances for DSK Shivajians FC for whom he scored four goals in 12 appearances. He has continued his dry spell in the ISL this season even after starting four matches and coming on as a substitute in two other matches.

His poor performances in the ISL could lead to an omission from the upcoming Indian national team squad.

#3 Pritam Kotal

Pritam Kotal started his career playing for the Palian Arrows and moved to Mohun Bagan where he made over 60 appearances and was part of the league win as well. He went on loan to FC Pune City for two seasons before signing with ATK in 2016 where he won his maiden Indian Super League title.

The 24 year old signed for the Delhi Dynamos this season for Rs. 75 Lakhs, becoming the second most expensive defender in this season's draft behind Anas. He has been part of an abysmal defence that has conceded 19 goals in seven matches en route to becoming the first team to lose six matches on the bounce in the ISL. He even scored an own goal in the 5-1 demolition of his side by FC Goa.

The right back has made 22 appearances for the national team, starting 21 of those matches and stamping himself as a mainstay in the senior team over the last two years. But, on the back of some poor performances for Delhi, he could be dropped by Constantine from the national team.

#2 Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

The goalkeeper started his career with East Bengal but made only 27 appearances in his five year stint at the club. After that, he signed for Norwegian club Stabaek. In his time in Europe, he became the first Indian to start a European top division league game. He also became the first Indian to make an appearance in a UEFA club competition.

After coming back from Europe, Gurpreet was signed by Bengaluru FC as they prepared for their first season in the ISL. The Punjab-born goalkeeper has conceded seven goals in six appearances including a very easy Jeje effort against Chennai. He was also red carded in that match for a moment of madness, hitting Lanzarote in the face and getting banned for the next two games.

Gurpreet has been a regular feature in the Indian starting XI, starting in 19 of his 20 appearances. He was able to snatch Subrata Pal's starting spot in the team in Pal's prime but given his recent performances, the Jamshedpur goalkeeper should come back into the starting XI instead of Singh.

#1 Sandesh Jhingan

Starting out with Sikkim United, he moved to Mumbai in 2014 but only found success in the yellow colors as he won the 'Emerging player of the League' in the first season of ISL. Since then, he has registered himself as a fan favorite among the Yellow Army after helping the side qualify for two ISL finals in three years.

Sandesh Jhingan became the highest paid Indian defender in the ISL after penning a deal worth Rs. 3.8 Crores to be paid over a period of three years. He was even made the captain of the side this year, though he has been quite poor this season, with his side conceding 10 goals in seven matches. Out of those 10 goals, two were scored from penalties given away by Jhingan.

He has won 22 caps for the national team and has started in 21 of those games, but looks set to lose his starting spot to his Indian compatriots doing much better this season.
