5 players who could join Manchester United this summer

Manchester United v Swansea City - Premier League
Mourinho is plotting multiple summer transfer moves

Jose Mourinho will be looking to spend a huge amount of money getting new players to strengthen his team. In the last two windows, the Portuguese coach has invested in both the midfield and forward, getting Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez on two separate occasions.

The backline currently looks the weakest and most vulnerable to changes. Mourinho will want to ensure he gets the best defenders on his team so that they can challenge their Premier League rivals for the title.

The former Chelsea manager has been known to be a defensive minded manager. He enjoys getting his team to soak up the pressure, stand firmly in their positions and counter-attack only when they have the chance. The current defenders in the team are getting older, and Mourinho has difficulties trusting young ones like Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly.

Here are five transfer targets who could move to join Manchester United next season.

#5 Samuel Umtiti

France v Colombia - International Friendly
Samuel Umtiti is set to play for France in the World Cup

The Barcelona man is rumoured to be highly likely to be joining the Red Devils in the summer transfer window. Manchester United has targeted the French centre-back for quite a few seasons. In the upcoming transfer window, the Premier League team seems likely to get their hands on him.

Despite the rumours that Umtiti could join Manchester United, Barcelona are determined to tie the 24-year-old down. With a release clause of just 52 million euros for the highly-rated player, Manchester United will go all out to meet the sum.

The centre-back has been recognised as being able to read the game well in advance and is becoming a regular player in the France national team. It will be no surprise if he ultimately decides to join Manchester United after the World Cup.

#4 Alex Sandro

Juventus v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Leg One
Sandro has been impressive since his move to Juventus

The Brazilian left-back is quick on his feet and a great tackler. Manchester United is looking for players who can bolster their defence and regain some stability at the backline.

At the same time, Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain are said to have joined in the race for his signature this summer. In order to be the front-runners, Manchester United are reportedly preparing a 70 million euros bid for Sandro.

Jose Mourinho has had little trust in his team's left-back, Luke Shaw. This means that the English could be making a move away from Old Trafford this summer and as such, Manchester United will be forced into buying an experience left-back as a replacement.

#3 Danny Rose

England v Italy - International Friendly
Rose has played just 6 Premier League games this season

Rose has dropped out of favour in the Tottenham team and fans have not been too happy about his performances either. With his future looking bleak at Tottenham, Rose may be tempted to make a move away from Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The English national is not without pursuers and Manchester United is one of the teams looking out for him. Prior to the January transfer window, ESPN FC pundit, Alejandro Moreno, claimed that the defender will move to Old Trafford.

Rose missed multiple games after a long-term knee injury and has not been able to get back into Pochettino's first-team. That could be the reason why Manchester United did not make the move for him in January as they wait until the summer to make a bid.

#2 Faouzi Ghoulam

SSC Napoli v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League
Ghoulam has been a vital player for Napoli

The Alergian international has been out for a couple of months after suffering two consecutive knee injuries. Despite his injuries, he is one of the favourites to make a move to Old Trafford. The left-back has a contract with Napoli FC which lasts until 2022, but a low 22 million euros release clause could easily spell the end of his career at Napoli.

Manchester United are looking for reinforcements to strengthen the defence line and put up a strong challenge for next season's Premier League. The fullback has gained plenty of experience from his five years spent in Serie A and stands to be a good fit for Mourinho.

#1 Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

SS Lazio v Juventus - Serie A
The midfielder could be moving to Premier League

Standing tall at 1.91m, the central midfielder has the heights and upper body strength to be a good defensive midfielder. Playing primarily in the central midfield, the Lazio player is capable and excellent in holding up the play for his team.

His precise passing and intelligent positioning are vital components of his good play, shaping him to become an important player for the Serie A team.

Lazio will be unwilling to sell their dominant midfielder at a cheap price and is demanding more than 90 million euros for this player. Manchester United is need of a footballer who can play in multiple roles in the midfield and exert dominance in the game. Hence, Sergej may be the answer to Mourinho's side.
