#3 Fabinho (AS Monaco)

Villarreal v Monaco: UEFA Champions League
Fabinho wanted to leave Monaco last summer but the club had other ideas

Fabinho imposed himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the European scene last season, as he helped AS Monaco clinch the French league title away from Paris Saint-Germain, while being fundamental and their impressive run in the UEFA Champions League, before being eliminated at the hands of Juventus in the semi-final.

Monaco agreed to sell many of their key players, such as Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva to Manchester City, Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea and Kylian Mbappé to Paris Saint Germain.

However, when PSG and Manchester United came calling for Fabinho, the club refused to sell him at any reasonable price. The midfielder felt for a moment like he was a prisoner at the club, and did not understand why his teammates were allowed to leave, while he was not.

After a lot of fuss, Fabinho had no choice but to remain where he is. Monaco have notably regressed this season, far away from PSG in the league standings, and have already been eliminated from the Champions League, after failing to progress past the group stage.

Meanwhile, compatriots Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Dani Alves and Neymar are enjoying great success in the French side.

Paris Saint-Germain are desperate for a defensive midfielder at the moment, especially after the frequent injuries to Thiago Motta. Fabinho would have been, and would actually still be, a perfect fit in their tactical scheme.
