The prospect of playing against a former club always is emotional for players. But it is not easy as a fan either, seeing a former star of your club in the starting line-up of the opposing team.

And the only thing that can make matters worse than they already are is when said former player manages to find the back of the net against you. Well, conceding goals is part of the game, but it makes you wonder, of all the players on the pitch why it had to be that specific player who got on the score-sheet.

Players who decide to join rival teams in the same league face their former clubs at least twice every season, and thus a player playing upfront is bound to score and break the hearts of some of his fans eventually.

For players who moved out of the league, it is once in a blue moon before they ever get to face their former teams, possibly in European competition. And some players over the years have made sure whenever they face their former clubs in the UEFA Champions League, they'd score against them.

Sadly James Rodriguez is not included in this list, though he scored a stunner against Real Madrid, because he is still a Real Madrid player, and was on loan at Bayern Munich when he scored against Los Blancos.

#5 Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic captained PSG when he faced his former club Malmo

PSG were drawn with FC Malmo in the 2015 Champions League season. This meant only one thing, it was time for Zlatan to pay a visit to his boyhood club.

Having failed to score in the first leg of the fixture held at Parc des Princes, the stage was set for Ibrahimovic to mark his return to the Swedbank Stadion with a goal.

But even before half-time, the visitors had scored two goals, and it was looking like Zlatan would again come up short against the hosts.

The wait was finally over when just minutes into the second half, the Swede made a marauding run from the left flank into the box and scored a stunner.

He decided not to celebrate too much, and showed respect to his hometown club.

#4 David Luiz

Chelsea v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League Round of 16
Luiz celebrates scoring against Chelsea in the Round of 16 fixture between PSG and Chelsea

We all know how much David Luiz loves scoring goals, and what usually follows these goals are crazy celebrations by the Brazilian.

Luiz became the hero for the Parisians and the villain in the eyes of the Stamford Bridge faithful, when he scored the equalising goal against his former club in their 2014-15 Champions League round of 16 fixture.

It was a crucial strike, which eventually helped PSG win on away goals. But it was his passionate celebrations after scoring the goal which remain fresh in everyone's memory.

Scoring a goal against your former club can be very emotional, but celebrating wildly, rather than showing respect in front of the home fans who loved him during his spell at the club, was a bit too much.

#3 Alvaro Morata

Juventus v Real Madrid CF - UEFA Champions League Semi Final
Morata after scoring against Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League

Alvaro Morata, the player who came up through the ranks of Real Madrid, would come back to haunt his old side when he scored 2 goals against them in the 2 legs of the semi-final fixture between Real Madrid vs Juventus in 2015.

It was at one of the biggest stages Morata could ever face his former side. He scored his first goal against Los Blancos at the Allianz Stadium within 8 minutes from kick-off.

But it has to be the crucial away goal, in front of the fans that at some point in time chanted his name, at his former home ground which must be unforgettable for him.

And his goals were just about enough to deliver the fatal blow to Real Madrid. Now, that's how you face off against your old club.

#2 Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League Round of 16
Ronaldo refuses to celebrate after scoring the winner against Manchester United

It was one of the biggest homecoming events in history of football. The goal-scoring leviathan, nurtured and molded at Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo was back in Manchester, looking for another goal at the stadium from where he had announced himself onto the world stage.

Having scored a goal already in the first leg of the round of 16 fixture of the 2012-13 season, Ronaldo was ready to make his visit to his former club a memorable one.

He delivered on all this buildup when he met a cross near the 6 yard box to score the winning goal that eliminated The Reds from the competition, but it was his first leg header which was much more memorable, given it was his first against his former club.

#1 Mohamed Salah

Liverpool v A.S. Roma - UEFA Champions League Semi Final Leg One
Salah scoring his second goal against Roma in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals

The Egyptian left-footed wizard, Salah is just unstoppable on his day. No one could testify to this statement better than his current teammate Alisson, who could only watch as the FIFA Puskas Award winner scored two absolute gems against him.

After having established himself as a deadly winger in the Serie A with AS Roma, as fate would have it, Salah was up against his former club the very next season after leaving them. Liverpool faced Roma in the Champions League semi-finals 2017-18, with the first leg taking place at Anfield.

And he made the most of it. Determined to prove that he had developed since parting ways with the club, he would score not only one but two goals against the Romans.

Unfortunately he couldn't score in front of the Roman fans in the away leg, but he had already done enough to see his old club get knocked out of the competition.
